Responsible for collecting, processing, and performing testing of patient specimens
Med Lab Tech
Responsible for collecting, processing, and testing patient specimens for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Responsibilities:
Med Tech-
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Supports and communicates Laboratory initiatives and philosophies.
- Collects, Processes and Receives specimens (including blood, urine, fecal, body fluid) to be analyzed in all departments of the clinical laboratory (listed above). Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens of analysis of all age ranges.
- Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of personnel, equipment, cost and establishment of reference intervals; writes and revises technical procedures.
- Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
- Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results.
- Reviews all instrument indicators and temperature monitors for laboratory departments
- Responsible for maintaining self-competency in laboratory skills
Med Lab Tech-
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Observes safety and biohazard precautions.
- Performs patient testing in assigned areas of the laboratory.
- Performs and maintains QC and QA for all tests performed.
- Operates, troubleshoots and repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on equipment in their assigned section(s).
- Inventories and orders supplies in their assigned section(s).
- Cleans laboratory and equipment.
- Reviews procedures annually in technical sections as established in the Laboratory QA Plan.
- Orients new personnel and teaches trainees/students.
- Knows and performs the duties of the Laboratory/Pathology Representative, Phlebotomist and Technical Assistant.
- Works with other hospital staff and leadership to ensure that testing needs of all patients are being met at all times.
- Documents and discloses all analysis errors that occur.
Med Tech-
Education
- Bachelor’s degree (or Associates Degree for grandfathered personnel)
Licenses and Certification
- CLS or MT (ASCP) or equivalent
- New MT Graduate must pass certification exam within 6 months of employment start date
Med Lab Tech-
Education
- Associate’s degree
Licenses and Certification
- Eligible to sit for MLT (ASCP) or equivalent
- Must be certified within 6 months of hire
