UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, has had a long history of working to keep our community healthy and has grown to become a trusted teaching hospital for medical and surgical care in Baltimore City.
Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.

Under direct supervision of the on-site physician, assists in the delivery of patient care. Performs delegated medical tasks, assists physician and nursing staff with patient care and may perform clerical duties. Where electronic system is in use, this position will utilize the EMAR for documentation purposes. Fulfillment of job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/ from medication storage and delivery areas. Fully participates in the day to operations and patient flow, and acts as a resource for Medical Assistant I and Medical Assistant II. Models teamwork, leadership by collaboration, communication, accountability, customer service, and mastery of clinical skills.

• 
  Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record/EMAR. Act as a clinical resource for MAI.
• Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by the health care provider.
• Performs routine clinic testing, including but not limited to: obtaining blood and urine specimen, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, EKG, rapid point of care testing, and vital signs.
• Assists provider with procedures including minor surgical procedures.
• Obtains necessary blood and urine specimens.
• Provides pre-printed patient education /material as directed by physician.
• Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.
• Performs cleaning and disinfection of environment of care. Performs high level disinfection of equipment instruments per unit/hospital procedure.
• Maintains necessary supplies in clinical area.
• Functions effectively in all medical assistant roles specific to clinic. Works independently and serves as a resource for others. May precept new medical assistant and medical assistant students within the clinic.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations(s) served. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to address patient/family needs.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
• Administers select medications and injections under direct supervision of physician as per clinic and hospital policy. Assist in the UMMS immunization program, including giving injections and tracking data in a computer program.
• Participates in medical assistant skill development and competency evaluation.
• Participates in clinic peer review process. Assists manager as appropriate with performance management of medical assistant I and medical assistant II.
• Responsible for self-learning; attends educational offerings and in-services independently.
• Assists with the development and evaluation of clinical processes and orientation program relevant to the medical assistant role.
• Models customer service behaviors. Identifies and integrates best practices for service and operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions.

• Demonstrated proficiency in medical clinic scheduling systems (STAR, GE, IDX, etc.)
