The Museum Exhibit Engineer designs, engineers, fabricates, installs, and maintains complex exhibit systems, structures, and components. Envisions and creates exhibit concepts, fabrication plans, specifications, floorplans, and drawings for new permanent exhibits, exhibit redesigns, and temporary and traveling exhibits. This includes research and design of ADA-compliant and accessible immersive environments and exhibit components such as lighting, specialty display cases with and without climate-controls, mechanical and computer interactives, video and audio displays, walls, ceilings, flooring, seating, cabinetry, sculpture, and cohesive graphic style and direction. Sculpture may include models used for exhibit design, maquettes for sculpture reference, and final sculpture for display. Graphic work may include directing design of interpretive panels, murals, and banners, including illustration and graphic design. Is a key member of the museum exhibit design and fabrication team, including leading brainstorming sessions for initial designs and visitor experiences; developing and adjusting design details based on team feedback; developing shop and fabrication drawings, traveling exhibit plans, materials, and logistics. Fabrication oversight includes communicating with internal and external fabricators regarding methods and materials; adapting designs and plans as project timelines and costs change; developing and sharing schedules; obtaining fabrication quotes and submitting purchase order requests. Temporary and traveling exhibit duties include coordinating and communicating with staff and venues to develop realistic exhibit load plans and floor layouts, and potential travel to venues to set up/strike exhibits.
Schedules and oversees construction and renovation projects, completing detailed reviews of architectural, engineering design and construction drawings, for feasibility, accessibility, ease of maintenance and efficiency in museum operations. Leads exhibit fabrication process: scheduling, planning, budgeting, and overseeing fabrication of structures and artifact displays. Reviews, approves, and adapts materials and construction plans to ensure final products are of the highest quality and sustainable operationally. Schedules, facilitates, and oversees contractor work, providing access, oversight, and adapting plans and materials as needed. Coordinates schedules, issues, and changes with Operations Manager.
Requires extensive and comprehensive knowledge of construction techniques and materials, artifact conditions, mounting technologies, sculpture, and display maintenance requirements. Requires ability to develop custom solutions to unique and complex issues, insuring successful outcomes. Self-motivated, highly productive team leader and partner with superior problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; excellent decision making and time-management skills; effective written and verbal communication skills.
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; weekend and evening work, including travel, as required for temporary and traveling exhibit setup and strikes and special projects.
$45,000-$50,000, negotiable based on skills and experience
Masters degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in related field with five years museum exhibit experience.
Requires knowledge of Adobe CS, prefer knowledge of SketchUp and CAD
