Responsibilities

Specifically, this position:

  • Exercises direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities within the ranger unit.
  • Provides information and directions to the public; investigates and resolves visitor complaints; ensures public safety and the enjoyment of park areas.
  • Effectively enforces park regulations and the Colorado Criminal Code.
  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
  • Contacts violators and issues warnings or citations; checks for appropriate park permits; conducts investigations.
  • Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statement of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
  • Prepares investigative and other reports, sketches, and drawings using appropriate grammar and symbols.
  • Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
  • Loads, unloads, aims, and fires handguns, shotguns, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
  • Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in antagonistic environments.
  • Processes and transports prisoners using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
  • Performs and/or supervises rescue operations at accidents, emergencies, and disasters until relieved by the appropriate agency or supervisor.

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Understand the principles and practices of effective natural resource management and park environment conservation for the benefit of the park user and for the protection of the park resources and facilities.
  • Have knowledge of park users' recreational activities including boating, fishing, hiking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, nature study, etc.
  • Have knowledge of wildlife, geology, environmental sciences, local, state history, and related subjects for the preparation and presentation of park interpretive programs.
  • Apply the basic principles of First Aid and CPR to the Emergency Medical Responder level.
  • Understand the hazards associated with park operations work including safe work practices and precautions.
  • Learn to use equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Evaluate unusual situations accurately and quickly; adopt an effective course of action.
  • Learn, understand, and interpret County, Sheriff's Office, and state laws, rules, regulations, and policies regarding park operations and law enforcement.
  • Apply a variety of law enforcement techniques used in patrol, investigation, and crime prevention.
  • Supervise and mentor professional and support staff in a productive and positive manner.

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Two (2) years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities required. Experience must be comparable to Ranger II (commissioned ranger) positions in Larimer County, including park regulation and state law enforcement. Experience in parks administration, outdoor recreation management, supervisory experience, natural resource management in a park or outdoor recreation setting, and related parks and outdoor recreation work is required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience in Park Administration, Natural Resource Management, Recreation Resources, Public Administration, or a related field required. Related education or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR certifications within twelve (12) months of hire required.
  • Possession of POST certification or ability to obtain Colorado POST Certification Peace Officer within nine (9) months of hire date required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License within 30 days of hire date required.

Supplemental Information

This position may work nights, weekends, holidays, and variable shifts.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
