Position Description:

Serco is looking for an experienced Naval Architect to join the Serco Boston team in supporting the PMS377 Landing Craft Division in the design, maintenance, and construction of the Navy's new Landing Craft Utility 1700 (LCU 1700), Ship to Shore Connector (SSC), and the Landing Craft Utility (LCAC).

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret level clearance post-employment.

In this position you will plan, coordinate, and work with other Naval Architects in performing design work and administering design and construction contracts for landing craft projects, including craft availabilities and boat alterations. You will provide technical advice and expertise when aspects of the work become problematic. Finally, you will coordinate and provide advice and review in the analysis, evaluation, conduct of feasibility studies, cost estimates, and resolution of complex technical problems associated with the plan, design, and development of advanced engineering systems and equipment that support Landing Craft construction projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments.
  • Reviews and edits technical manuals and drawings.
  • Conduct concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization.
  • Perform design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.
  • Structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads.
  • General arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
  • Assists with the review of design proposals and specifications.
  • Participates in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
  • Prepares documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering plus 5 to 7 years of relevant experience. In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for equivalent military work experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance post-employment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Photoshop, and MS Office is required.
  • Ability to design and provide the highest quality products and services that meet the needs and requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Advanced knowledge of naval architecture to perform routine analyses and prepare naval architectural deliverables in support of the design of ships, craft, and other floating structures.
  • Ability to lead a small team, and to analyze successes and failures for clues to improvement, and to tackle new and difficult challenges is the key to success in this position.
  • 10% travel required.
Additional desired experience and skills:
  • ShipConstructor software experience is desired.
Knowledge, skills, abilities:
  • Strong written, verbal communication and computer skills including various types of engineering software.
  • Must be able to assist in site visits to inspect naval craft, including climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
