Summary

The Associate Network Engineer provides network addressing for the Local Area Networks in the downtown campus and for the Tarrant County Wide Area Network, provides Enterprise Server connectivity to end user computers and printers and provides network problem resolution related to network connectivity. The incumbent provides configuration, monitoring and management of telecommunications infrastructure, including switches, routers, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, works independently on the maintenance and troubleshooting of backend systems and assists the Radio Communications Specialist and Network Engineers with large and/or complex installations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Resolves network connectivity issues related to network cabling.
  • Resolves network connectivity issues related to software.
  • Performs network equipment installations, relocations and removals.
  • Performs wireless assessments and installation of wireless and wired appliances
  • Assists with the monitoring and alerting of network infrastructure and endpoint devices.
  • Serves as backup to the Network Cabling Coordinator when that incumbent is out or the workload warrants additional help in that area. Coordinates with the cabling contractor or the Facilities department for small cabling jobs.
  • Configures the UPS network closet units and the network management software to monitor the UPS devices. Installs new firmware releases on the UPS systems when needed. Uses system monitors to detect problems in the network UPS devices that could affect network availability.
  • Assists the Radio Communications Specialist with large-scale radio unit updates such as software upgrades or large-scale radio programming changes.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's degree, preferably in IT-related field + Three (3) full-time years of experience working with industry networking protocols (TCP/IP, etc.), networking equipment and services installations.

  • High School Diploma or GED + Five (5) full-time years of experience working with industry networking protocols (TCP/IP, etc.), networking equipment and services installations.

  • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) certification required or obtained within one (1) year of accepting position.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification and Security+ or higher professional certificate preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of cabling installation standards and skills needed to test and repair structured cabling systems.
  • Knowledge and experience managing small- to moderate-sized UPS systems.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to coordinate various activities simultaneously, make decisions and work without direct supervision.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license.

If hired, must provide proof of educational attainment at new hire processing.

Tarrant County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications since the age of seventeen (17) and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records, and educational attainment. A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually. Incumbent must hold a valid Driver's License or State Issued ID card.
