Are you looking for a position with the flexibility to pick and choose your work hours? Are you wanting a few extra hours a month? We are seeking an individual who will take direction from the Guest Services Management and Sales teams in carrying out the guest experience in relation to all event activities. You will provide friendly and efficient guest service while educating and interacting with the guests of Newport Aquarium during special events. You can expect to guide guests on the proper touch technique in our animal encounter touch tanks, perform an animal talk in our shark theater or penguin palooza, or help guests throughout the aquarium.

Event Services Team Members are needed only for Exhibit Operations during events. Our events calendar is published 3-months in advance so you can see which events fit your schedule. Most events are during the evenings. Weekly hours cannot be guaranteed yet you will have the flexibility to work around your schedule. This position’s duties DO NOT include event planning, meal service, or related duties.

Required Skills


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with event set-up needs, including setting tables, chairs and other décor to prepare for event start.
  • Assist with event tear-down needs, including breaking down tables, chairs and other décor to prepare for next day public operation.
  • Understand and follow planning documents, including staff timeline and floor plans, to ensure successful event execution.
  • Perform and adhere to, Herschend Family Entertainment Core Values and Newport Aquarium Guest Services Standards, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols to ensure safe and efficient guest and event services operations.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Approach guests in a friendly manner to offer assistance and provide information regarding Newport Aquarium.
  • Arrive on time and ready to work all scheduled shifts, and in accordance with aquarium uniform and appearance standards.
  • Keep safety as a number one priority at all times while working at Newport Aquarium.
  • Understand policies and procedures relating to the overall functions of Guest Services department and Event Services.
  • Work with other team members/departments of Newport Aquarium to ensure effective communication is implemented at all times.
  • Maintain knowledge of activities, aquatic life, and Newport Aquarium special events/promotions in order to properly notify and inform guests.
  • Must be self-motivated to work independently, as well as, disciplined and reliable.
  • Maintain appropriate guest and team member relations at all times, ensuring guest and team satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service, interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
  • Handle comments, concerns, and suggestions regarding policy and procedure from guests and team members.
  • Take direction from and work with the Sales Events teams, following all policies and procedures of the Newport Aquarium.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Guest Services Management Team.


Required Experience


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have strong public speaking skills.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must read, write, and speak the English language (knowledge of other languages a plus).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and holidays. Evening availability is required.
  • Knowledge of events a plus.
  • Knowledge of marine life a plus.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to roll and set 50 pounds.
  • Physical strength, push or pull up to 200 pounds (with pallet jack).

Note: Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.
