DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Enterprise Infrastructure Services’ (EIS) team within Information and Educational Technology (IET) creates, deploys, and manages business, academic, and infrastructure systems. The vast infrastructure of campus wireless, telephone, data, video, and radio systems is maintained and supported by the Network Operations Center (NOC), a unit of EIS.

The NOC Programmer position provides leadership for campus data and wireless network design, administration, operations and security activities for IET that support the University’s mission of instruction, research, and outreach.

JOB SUMMARY

Under direction of the Network Operation Center Programmer Supervisor, this position supports network planning & design of infrastructure and provides mid-level operation support of campus network infrastructure. Administers and operates a complex network environment and leads, manages, coordinates and implements activities and projects for campus data and wireless network infrastructure in order to improve, maintain and secure critical campus network services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Valid CA driver’s license required. Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
  • Vacation is restricted during peak work periods.
  • Work flexible or extended hours and/or flexible shifts outside of 8 AM to 5 PM to meet project deadlines or to respond to emergency situations, participation in formal on-call status for after-hours repair/response.
  • May, at times, work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Experience coordinating enterprise-wide data network design and implementation projects.
  • Organizational and analytical experience to establish priorities, organize tasks, and direct implementation of tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience documenting systems, reports, work flow and procedures.
  • Experience analyzing complex information or problems in an objective manner and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, selecting appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others.
  • Experience preparing and presenting complex information, recommendations, and strategies to organization-wide groups of various sizes and hierarchical levels.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing strategic, innovative, and integrated technical solutions.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience with and knowledge of complex data network systems such as routers, network switches, optical switches, wireless access-points and controllers, packet shapers, DNS/DHCP applications, network monitoring and trend analysis systems, packet sniffers, firewalls, intrusion prevention/detection systems, and authentication applications/protocols.
  • Experience with data network protocols and management including TCP/IP, ICMP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS/VPLS, VRRP, VSRP, Spanning Tree, Ethernet, 802.1q, DSL, PIM, IGMP, SIP, RTP, SNMP, RMON, and sFlow.
  • Experience with Radius, 802,1x, SSH, SSL and other methods of providing security for passwords and network communications.
  • Experience with wireless communications protocols, including 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n.
  • Experience working with others in designing effective databases, and developing reports and applications that utilize relational databases.
  • Experience using the Windows/UNIX/Linux operating system including systems management, scripting, and network security.
  • Experience with data network administration and management of a large, complex data network supporting administrative, instructional and research functions.
