Markets are served by production facilities and in-market sales and marketing teams in Africa, Asia, Germany, Ireland, the UK, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, and the US.

Ornua Ingredients is responsible for the procurement of Irish and non-Irish dairy products and for the sale of dairy ingredients to food manufacturing and foodservice customers across the world. Ornua Ingredients is also responsible for managing volatility through de-risking and trading strategies. The business is supported by production facilities in Saudi Arabia, Spain, the UK, the US and by in-market teams in Africa and the Middle East.

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will join the existing innovation team who are managing a range of exciting projects in Ingredient Innovation for Ornua. The candidate will be involved in the innovative process from idea generation to final product launch using existing project management principles. The team also work on becoming subject matter experts on Irish Dairy Ingredients that are sold through Ornua and on understanding the functionality and performance of these ingredients in customer applications.

This work will be achieved through product and process development work compromising pilot plant trials, laboratory analysis, functionality testing, and evaluations. The process will be driven by the commercial requirements of Ornua Ingredients Ireland. The appointee will undertake a mixture of bench scale testing and evaluation in the laboratory, pilot plant work on trials, and potential scale up trials at a manufacturing site.

The position is based in the modern, recently opened, Ornua Innovation Centre, National Food Innovation Hub, Moorepark, Fermoy.

There will be some national and international travel associated with this position.

Key Areas of Responsibility

For innovation projects, the NPD Technologist will support the Product Development Manager in
Scoping the project and preparing project brief
Designing & planning the NPD work to be undertaken
Executing the plan as part of team
Inputting, reporting, and interpreting results and making recommendations for the next steps to be taken to ensure successful outcomes
Communicating with key stakeholders in Ornua Ingredients and presenting data in a customer facing understandable format
Undertaking analysis and providing technical product information to answer technical queries by the commercial teams. Carrying out both routine laboratory work as well as project and customer related laboratory work and contribute to the day to day running of the laboratory
To be a proficient user of all laboratory equipment and pilot plant equipment, be responsible for maintenance and calibration of specific laboratory equipment, assisting in the training of others as required.
Work to project management principles and as part of team to drive the delivery of results in each project.
Become a subject matter expert in dairy ingredients and processing as required by each project.
Report on research activity in both oral and written format to key technical and commercial stakeholders.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a background in Dairy Science, be passionate about innovation, demonstrate excellent teamwork and have strong problem-solving skills, while being adaptable and proactive, with great attention to detail and demonstratable laboratory/pilot plant skills.

Key Requirements and Attributes

0-3 years’ work experience in NPD / lab environment, preferably in food industry.
Strong laboratory and pilot plant-based skills.
Knowledge and experience of Dairy Science & Dairy Processing would be an advantage.
Knowledge of project management principles.
Organised, strong team player with good communication skills, great attention to detail, flexible, helpful, and ability to work on own initiative, be adaptable and able to pivot with change.
Good computer skills. Proficient user of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Qualifications:
Minimum Degree Food Science and Technology or related discipline.
