Your Opportunity

Stantec, is actively seeking on-call biological field technicians (entry-level) to support our Environmental Services team of scientists, engineers, planners and other environmental professionals in our Northern California business unit, in the Bishop and Sacramento, CA offices.

As an on-call biological field technician, you will be part of a team conducting various field studies in the California Central Valley, foothills, and Sierra Nevada Mountains, CA from May to September 2023. You will learn how to collect biological data or further develop your data collection skills as you assist with a wide array of studies including fish population, amphibian, reptile, water quality, geomorphology, and hydrological monitoring.

Our working environments are highly variable, with regular work in settings ranging from sea level to 10,000 feet in elevation and include working outside for extended amounts of time in hot and cold environments. Requirements will include:

  • Hiking long distances with field gear, lift heavy objects, climb, bend, and perform other physical activities.
  • Travelling by alternate forms of transportation, including backpacking, horseback riding, or traveling by helicopter.
  • May require camping at elevation or staying in dormitories or other communal housing (Sacramento only) – as much of our work also involves multi-day work tasks.
  • Assisting with post-collection data entry and technical report writing in an office environment.

You will have the opportunity to work in wild and scenic environments and contribute to meaningful restoration, monitoring, and pre-construction projects in the water and energy industry.

Your Responsibilities

  • Support data collection efforts for various aquatic and fisheries-related projects and field programs, including fish surveys (also other aquatic species), instream flow/hydrology, geomorphology, water temperature, and general water quality
  • Data entry and some report preparation
  • Manage technical data and prepare tables and figures
  • Maintain field gear

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Some biological data collection experience
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Strong outdoor ethic and skills
  • Willingness to learn and follow directions
  • Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • General knowledge of Northern California watersheds
  • General knowledge of aquatic biology/ water resources/ water quality
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative
  • Creative, resourceful, and detail-oriented
  • Positive and energetic attitude

Your Education and Experience

High School diploma. Some college experience preferred.

Work experience in an outdoor setting involving rigorous physical activity.

0-2 years of experience collecting biological data in a field setting. Must have a basic understanding of biological principles and proficiency in use of word processing and spreadsheet computer software.

Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Salary Range(s):

  • $21.20 per hour - $25.44 per hour (CA, CO locations only)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
