NVE Inc. is looking for a team member who is skilled and licensed as an engineer, who is able to troubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment, and takes pride in their work. The position is in Washington, DC for a 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM shift (Wed – Sat) and a 7 AM – 3 PM Shift on Sundays. Must have a current 3rd class certification/license issued by the District of Columbia board (classified as a Steam Engineer, Title 17), i.e. DC 3rd, as well as at least five (5) years’ experience at the 3rd class level, obtained within the past seven (7) years in the field of operating high pressure steam systems, and operating refrigerant-based chillers with operating capacity of over 80 tons (minimum). Work requires touring throughout a 1.5 M square feet facility to identify any issues and to make initial emergency response within the general scope of our responsibilities, and initiate the emergency recall procedures.

We are looking for a team member who is skilled and also enjoys learning new equipment. We take pride in cross training all of our team members on the various types of equipment and building automation systems through on the job training.

NVE provides full O&M support at this facility. The Operating Engineer would be responsible for:

  • Operating and maintaining the assigned facility and all related systems/components, including the building automation system.
  • Performing tours of areas and/or equipment as directed by management and required under the contract specification.
  • Performing service calls, diagnostic services, and incidental, minor, and major repairs as required.
  • Performing preventive maintenance duties in accordance with NVE or contract standards, building protocol, manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.
  • Other duties include, but not limited to optimizing central plant operations, analyzing and interpreting readings on equipment and on the BAS to insure safe and efficient operation of each system, maintaining accurate refrigeration operating records/logs, maintaining motors, machinery, and equipment of the system in top working order.
  • Performing other duties as required or directed by management.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions:

Ability to walk miles a day at a time. Have the ability to make repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Works with systems and equipment in hard-to-reach places requiring standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tight and uncomfortable positions. The worker frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment that weighs up to 20 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 80 pounds. The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. Sometimes may be required to make installations and repairs when bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat conditions and to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises burns and infections. Welding involves exposure to flying sparks, glare of torches and heated materials.

Licensing, certifications, and proof of training, to substantiate experience will be required as part of the application process for:

  • Licensed Stationary DC 3rd Class License required.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal CFC License, desirable
  • Factory Training for different boiler/chiller systems, desirable

Candidates must have the ability to obtain and maintain a public trust (HSPD-12) clearance. Having an existing HSPD-12 clearance is highly desirable.

This is a Local 99-99A AFL-CIO Union Position. Candidate must be willing to join the Union.
