General Summary:

Assists the Optometrist in the day to day operations of the Human Services Optometry Program providing the highest quality customer service.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manages the optical activities of the Optometry Program.
  • Pretest patients; takes brief history from patient.
  • Assists with selling, illustrating and demonstrating use of product, sizing, and dispensing spectacles and with follow up services including adjustments, repairs and troubleshoots eyeglass problems.
  • Documents and places orders for contact lenses and glasses.
  • Maintains all frame boards and their inventory practices and keeps them current according to stipulation in eyeglasses contract.
  • Performs complicated frame measurements necessary to assure cosmetically, physically and optically optimum spectacle performance, e.g. mulit-focal lenses, special specification lenses.
  • Verifies spectacle prescriptions through use of lensometer, lens gauges and other instrumentation.
  • Performs minor frame repairs.
  • Interviews patients and records health history and other appropriate findings.
  • Performs additional procedures at the request of the optometrist, e.g. visual fields, vision training, etc.
  • Provides instruction on insertion, removal and care of contact lenses.
  • Assists in the coordination of eye care programs of the Optometry Program and other Human Service Division staff.
  • Documents and places order of contact lenses and glasses.
  • Orders all optical supplies and tools.
  • Ensures proper storage of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments to comply with professional standards and regulations.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal physical requirements.

Position Qualifications:

  • Two years’ optician experience including providing direct service or Optician certification is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Knowledge of Native American communities, culture, customs, and beliefs is preferred.
  • Experience working with Native American clients, communities and is able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity is required.
  • Understanding of medical terminology is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.
  • Some travel is required.
