Overview:Atwell Owner’s Engineers advise project owners during the design and construction of their renewable energy projects.
Atwell Renewable Energy Team
- Has over 50 years and 25,000 MW of utility-scale renewable energy project experience
- Solar PV, wind, battery storage, substations and transmission lines
- Clients are project owners and developers – their utility-scale projects are 100s of MW each
- Provides full project lifecycle support
- Development, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, performance testing, operation, maintenance, repower, decommissioning
- Owner Services Team includes
- Owners Engineers (OEs)
- Owner’s Representatives on Site during Construction (ORs)
Atwell Owner’s Engineers
- Act as Atwell clients’ expert technical advisors on design work performed by an Engineer of Record or other
- Review and advise on engineering designs, studies, calculations, etc. – civil, structural, electrical, SCADA, etc.
- Are not an Engineer of Record nor take responsibility for the designs issued by others
- Interact directly with our clients to help them reduce technical and execution risk by advising them on how they can avoid engineering design related issues – equipment, components and systems
- Interact directly with our clients’ third-party engineering firms, contractors and related parties
- Support our owner clients by supporting, reviewing and advising on the technical aspects of their projects
- Feasibility studies, performance modeling, Owner’s pro forma
- Conceptual designs – Issue for Permit, Issue for Bid, etc.
- Interconnection (LGIA); Power Purchase (PPA) and Energy Storage Services (ESSA) Agreements
- Scope and requirements for owner-issued preliminary studies
- Writing EPC Scope of Work and Technical Specifications for turnkey and subcontract services
- Building EPC RFP technical package, Bidder RFIs, reviewing Bidder proposals, Short List selection, contract and exhibit technical markups, contract Awardee selection and contract negotiation support
- All disciplines – civil, structural, PV/MV/HV electrical, C&I, SCADA, etc.
- Including supporting studies, calculations and design bases
- Against applicable codes and standards, contract requirements, manufacturers’ requirements
- Design for constructability, serviceability, and established good industry practices
- Owner Supplied Major Equipment – advise on suppliers, bankability studies, RFQs and supply agreements
- Equipment and materials – procurement specifications, manufacturer’s requirements, delivery schedules
- Manufacturer’s Quality Assurance – QC procedures, product testing capabilities, test data and reports
- Witnessing Factory Acceptance Testing – inverter PCS, BESS modules, GSU/MPT, etc.
- Contractor RFIs, technical documentation, OE site visits, technical issue support
- Collaborating with and supporting Atwell Owner’s Representatives on Site
- Witnessing major project milestones – Mechanical Completion, cold commissioning, energization, hot commissioning, performance testing, commercial online, Substantial Completion
- Owner’s Punch List, corrective works
- Owner training, operational documentation, Final Completion and Turnover
- Spare parts inventory advisement, lookback performance data reviews, underperformance and failure event investigation support, repowering advisement, decommissioning (deconstruct, recycle, restoration) advisement
Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of experience with the design of utility-scale renewable energy projects
- Familiarity with the construction of these projects is highly desirable
- Familiarity with commissioning, testing and failure analysis is highly desirable
- An Electrical Engineering degree or similar from an accredited university, or commensurate experience
- A professional engineering license is not required
- Fluently interact and collaborate with design engineers in other disciplines
- Civil, structural, PV/MV/HV electrical, C&I, SCADA, etc.
- High proficiency with taking
- Multi-disciplinary Systems approach to understanding engineering designs and operating facilities
- Functional and strategic approach to advising clients
- Owner-centric
- Experience interacting directly with project owners and their counterparties
- Ability to talk to clients in terms that are relevant and meaningful to them, not engineering-speak
- Ability to provide technical and strategic advisement, not just state facts
- Ability to understand, translate, and advise clients on a wide range of risks, tradeoffs and strategies
- Expert technical knowledge (design, operation, performance, reliability) of renewable energy generation and power delivery systems; including one or more of
- Solar PV systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), wind generation systems
- Medium Voltage collection systems, plant substations, plant SCADA systems, gen-tie lines
- Operations Centers, performance monitoring and analytic services
- Familiarity with renewable energy project ecosystems
- The various project participants and their specific objectives and motivations
- Knowledge of leading industry participants and industry trends
- Project portfolio developers, leading EPC firms, leading major equipment suppliers, leading Independent Engineer firms, major utilities and system operators
