Saolta University Healthcare Group provides a comprehensive range of Medical, Surgical, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Services to emergency and elective patients on an inpatient, outpatient and day care basis across the West and North West of Ireland. The Saolta University Healthcare Group comprises seven hospitals University Hospital Galway, Merlin Park, (UHG and MPUH) Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) and Roscommon University County Hospital, Mayo University General Hospital, Sligo University General and Letterkenny University General Hospitals.

Portiuncula Hospital has 169 inpatient beds and 24-day beds, its aim to deliver high quality and equitable care for all its patients, in a safe and secure environment, and to achieve excellence in clinical practice, teaching, training and research. Portiuncula Hospital provides a comprehensive range of services to patients in the emergency, inpatient and outpatient setting. Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe (PHB) operates as a Level 3 model hospital within the Saolta Hospitals Group.

Portiuncula Hospital provides acute and elective paediatric, obstetric, medical and surgical/anaesthetic services. The hospital also has a 24/7 Emergency Department with over 23,835 attendances per annum. The Paediatric Unit at Portiuncula comprises of 23 paediatric beds with 2 high dependency beds. The special care baby unit has 8 cots in total with 1 of these being intensive care. In 2014, there were 6153 paediatric unscheduled care visits to the Accident and Emergency Department, and 2,359 paediatric admissions. The Paediatric Outpatient Department facilitated over 5000 scheduled care outpatient attendances.

Education & Training:

Portiuncula University Hospital is a recognised site for training of undergraduate medical students from Univeristy of Galway and graduate entry medical students from Univeristy of Limerick. We are an accredited site for intern training for the West North West Intern Training program. We offer Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine to Senior House Officers on the RCPI training program and also an approved site with the ICGP West training scheme for GP training. We have international trainees on the CPSP program through RCPI and we also have Basic and Higher Specialist trainees in Surgery, Paediatrics and bstetrics and Gynaecology. There is formal structured weekly teaching for all medical staff in general internal medicine topics, MRCP teaching and exam preparation, advanced clinical skills training and inter professional simulation based education in the care of the deteriorating patient on a monthly basis.
