Job description

Perform semi-skilled work operating a passenger van on a demand-response system in order to safely transport passengers to their destinations in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide safe and efficient transportation to para-transit customers.


  • Safely operate passenger van on assigned route, adhering to time schedule.

  • Safely operate a van on a demand-response basis with instructions from dispatcher.

  • Perform routine pre-trip inspection of assigned vehicle.

  • Provide passenger assistance, including operation of wheelchair lift and securement devices as well as assistance to visually impaired passengers and others with varying disabilities. Secure passengers in wheelchairs to prevent movement during transport using 4 point tie down and shoulder restraint as needed or requested.

  • Assist with boarding/deboarding, transfers from seat to seat, and package handling.

  • Maintain passenger safety.

  • Ensure proper passenger management. Monitor and manage passengers in para-transit van to ensure safety and comfort.

  • Maintain order on van; respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Operate two-way radio system to communicate with dispatchers and other drivers.


  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • High school diploma or equivalent.


  • Possess and maintain a valid Class E Chauffeur license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle laws, ordinances, and safe driving practices.


  • Knowledge of streets and locations within the City of Columbia.

  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations, to write clearly and legibly, and to prepare basic records and/or reports.

  • Demonstrated mature, responsible attitude in dealing tactfully and congenially with customers.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.

  • Considerable ability to communicate effectively and to follow both oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to aid passengers with disabilities, including providing lifting/moving assistance for passengers boarding/deboarding buses.

  • Ability to offer courteous interactions with customers.

  • Knowledge and ability to sufficiently provide information.

  • Ability to operate basic office equipment.

  • Ability to concentrate and operate motor vehicle in moderate to high volume traffic.

  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, airborne particles/fumes, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, loud noise levels, or moving mechanical parts.


  • Frequently required to work in hazardous traffic conditions.

  • Exposed to moderate noise levels.

  • Must be able to sit, drive, and maneuver vans for extended periods of time.


  • Regularly required to talk and listen.

  • Must be able to grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl, climb/balance, move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor, and operate mechanical equipment.

  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement.

  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
