Job Summary and Qualifications

This position is a FT Night Shift position!


Position Objective:


The Paramedic’s primary responsibility is responding to Intra/Inter-Facility Transports. The Paramedic functions within the Emergency Department as a team with the Physicians, Registered Nurses (RN) and Physicians Assistants (PA). The Paramedic will to adhere to the Hospital's Standards of Patient Care to deliver safe, quality patient care in the Inter/Intra-Facility and Emergency Department settings. The Paramedic performs all treatments and procedures within the scope of Paramedic practice and as outlined in the Standards Manual, Protocols, Policies and Procedures and Practice Guidelines.

Patient Population Served:

This employee is expected to deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to patient's age, physical ability, and intellectual development. The Paramedic must demonstrate proficiency in assessment and treatment, and the ability to adapt care to meet the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.

Essential Position Functions:

The Shift Supervisor must be able to be carry out the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

1. Respond to Ambulance Requests

  • Operate the ambulance in a manner that is safe and effective, keeping crew, public, patient and equipment safety in mind.
  • Provide for adequate ambulance coverage for the community to include communicating with the Charge/Supervisor, or dispatch, to facilitate coverage of all requests.
  • Maintains the ambulances in a continuing state of readiness to include maintaining a clean vehicle that is properly stocked and performing a complete inspection of all engine and vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of the geography served and surrounding communities.
  • Complete all TEMSIS reports, billing documents and appropriate charges for ambulance requests within 24 hours, or in cases involving critical care, 4 hours.
  • Assessment of Emergency and Non-Emergency Patients to Scope of Care

  • Interviews patients and caregiver/family on presentation to obtain a bio-psycho-social history relevant to reason for presentation.
  • Examines the patient's physical status.
  • Reviews all test results including EKG, lab, and x-ray for ongoing assessment and reporting to physicians.
  • Reassesses patient status at established time frames.
  • Completes all required documentation in both EMS Charts and MediTech.
  • Communicates patient needs/assessment to physicians and interdepartmental services involved in the patient's care.
  • Ensures thorough, accurate documentation of relevant data obtained during the assessment process.
  • Conducts rounding in the Emergency Department when not engaged in other activities.
  • Ensures sensitivity towards patients and caregiver/family by eliciting patient's physical and emotional concerns, being a receptive listener, and providing an environment conducive to interviewing and the delivery of care.
  • Planning of Care
  • Develops an emergency care plan, in the prehospital setting, that is individualized to patient needs, strengths and weaknesses and according to written protocol and Medical Control.
  • In conjunction with other HCPs, coordinates the in-hospital interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Facilitates the patient and caregiver/family participation in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Implementation of Plan
  • Acknowledges, coordinates and implements physician orders.
  • Administers medications in accordance with State and hospital policy and monitors for desired, side or adverse effects.
  • Implements the plan of care, monitoring for effectiveness in a team format. The Paramedic must report to the RN patient condition and status of treatment plan prior to leaving for an ambulance call.
  • Assists the physician and other healthcare providers in administering treatments and procedures.
  • Applies behavior and supportive therapy approaches with individuals and groups to accomplish goals and facilitate the delivery of care.
  • Evaluating Plan of Care
  • Reviews and updates treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the patient and the family.
  • Accepts patient or room assignments in coordination with and as directed by the charge nurse.
  • Maintains a safe therapeutic environment for patients, families, staff, and corrects hazards promptly. Adheres to hospital safety policy and procedure.
  • Documents all pertinent information on the patient's medical record and patient care report in an accurate, detailed manner adhering to procedures for charting. Completes documentation in a timely manner
  • Participates actively in department meetings; ensuring attendance at a minimumof50% of scheduled meetings.
  • Supports Department's customer service efforts. Provides service excellence to patients and their families, medical staff, peers, support services and other hospital personnel. Provides immediate and satisfactory problem resolution for valid customer complaints or refers complex customer service problems to the Director of EMS.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and support for, hospital Mission and Values Statement, department goals and objectives. Assists in the formation and accomplishment of unit goals and objectives.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationship with physicians, peers, nursing, physician's assistants, patients and their families, and medical support services.
  • Follows the principles of infection control as outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Participates in the department's Performance Improvement program by collaborating with the department's PI representative in developing and implementing effective PI programs.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide care, which meets the physical, psychological and emotional, needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development and on-going education. Attends required hours of continuing professional education per year. Completes mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to containing costs and efficient use of material resources.
  • Assists Hospital-wide, when necessary, and responds to all codes as an integral part of the team.
  • Must be able to facilitate and manage the Hospital Decon Team, and be active on the Emergency Preparedness Team
  • Precepts students and ride-alongs as assigned; students will be treated with respect with the goal of assisting the student to meet clinical requirements. Staff is required to complete all evaluation documents and forward any issues to the Director of EMS.

Non-Essential Position Functions:

  • Participates in hospital/unit committees.
  • Performs other duties as needed or as judgment dictates.

Position Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a Paramedic program.
  • Current licensure as a Paramedic in the State of New Hampshire.
  • Current CPR certification at the healthcare provider level.
  • Valid Driver's license free from restrictions and insurable by hospital insurance company.
  • A Department of Motor Vehicle Driving History Release must be submitted prior to employment and annually must be in and remain in compliance with Portsmouth Regional Hospital Driver/Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress work environment.
  • Ability to maintain customer focused interpersonal communication skills and patient confidentiality.
  • BCLS, ACLS and PALS certification required to level of care

Physical Demands:

  • Will be exposed to contagious diseases. Must be able to wear protective equipment.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities with or without the aid of mechanical devices or a combination of skills that will result in the safe performance of the job.

Primary functions demand ability to:


  • administer life-saving procedures and first aid over extended periods of time;
  • bend the spine or to squat, intermittently, 33% of the shift or more;
  • reach with hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction, intermittently, for 66% of the shift or more;
  • push or pull with upto100 pounds of pressure, intermittently, for 66% of the shift or more;
  • lift and carry up to 50 pounds maximum, 1-5 pounds frequently;
  • grip/ grasp and do fine motor work with the hands and fingers, such as writing, managing paperwork and files, keying, managing equipment and instruments upto100% of the shift;
  • perceive attribute such as size, shape and temperature by touch;
  • perceive attributes of objects, such as color, shape, size, depth and location by sight;
  • express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word;
  • receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discrimination in sound;
  • read and write, including paper and computer communication, preparing and analyzing data and figures, computer terminal operation;
