Job Description
The ED Paramedic is assigned specific patient related tasks in the Emergency Department and is delegated by position to assist and support in the environmental maintenance of the Emergency Department. Example of the support role includes venipuncture’s, IV insertion, blood and urine specimen collections, routine vital signs, visual acuity, patient weight, application of monitoring equipment, cardiac monitoring, assisting with patient preparation, simple wound prep, dressings, and splinting under the direction of licensed staff. The ED Paramedic also assists in the efficient movement of patients through the system by transporting patients to treatment and diagnostic areas. The ED Paramedic will perform intra-departmental transport with cardiac monitoring when indicated. The ED Paramedic, under the direction of the nurse, communicates/updates patients and families awaiting care and treatment. The ED Paramedic, under the direction of a triage nurse will provide initial patient contact and assign a level of acuity to patients. The ED Paramedic functions in the role of Clerical performing those skills as trained.

Qualifications

Education, Credentials, Licenses:
High School Diploma/GED.
Functionally literate.
Graduate of approved EMS-TEI program
Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS certifications
Cardiac monitoring classes
Current Paramedic license for practicing state

• Indiana license must be approved by Homeland Security

Job Duties
Clinical : Participates as a member of the patient care delivery team. IV/IO insertions Performs EKG’s, cardiac monitoring, Assists with lifting and transporting patients, intra-departmental transport with cardiac monitoring, vital signs, and other duties as delegated by the nursing staff within scope of training. Follows all policies and procedures in the collection of blood and urine samples and in the performance of EKG’s, in an accurate and timely fashion Administer medications as ordered by a physician and within the scope
of paramedic licensure as directed under the state protocols Triage per ED triage policy, “the process of triage by a paramedic falls under the provisions of KRS 311A.1750 (5)(a) and 902 KAR 20:016 Section 4(8)(b). The scope of paramedic practice is permitted under 902Kar 20:016 and is within the scope of paramedic practice.” Pharmacology interventions documented with the response to the intervention. Fluid monitoring as indicated for any patient with a running IV. Including documentation of site. Oxygen may be initiated based on clinical judgment and assessment of the patient per physician protocol. Communicates all clinical care with primary nurse
Clerical : Assists with medical record keeping processes, order entry, phone management.
Customer Service : Assists nursing staff in addressing patient care needs, rounding frequently and insuring that environment is conducive to care. Functions in reception of patients and families to the ED in the triage and treatment areas. Communicates and updates patients and families on a regular basis while they are waiting for treatment, tests, or disposition, provide initial patient contact and assign level of acuity through collaboration with the primary/charge/triage nurse
Environmental : Assists in keeping department clean and orderly, as well as keeping the department stocked with supplies. Assists with maintenance of equipment and prevention of waste.
