We are recruiting experienced Park Caretakers to join our City of Martinez Parks Division
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks required in the Parks Division in assigned areas such as parks and other facilities, landscaped areas, street islands and street rights of way; performs related and other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents of positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi-skilled tasks with only general supervision; must have knowledge and skill required for park and facility maintenance, operation of swimming pool, and other equipment. The Park Worker II often works independently without direct supervision and acts as a crew leader as needed or may be assigned to perform more specialized/skilled tasks. Incumbents may be required to work weekends during certain seasons of the year.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Water landscaped areas; digs holes and trenches; plants and maintains lawns, shrubs, and trees; pulls, cuts, spades, or hoes weeds; cultivates soil; picks up rubbish and litter; cleans walkways, driveways, parking areas, restrooms, play areas and equipment, picnic and recreation facilities; gathers and feeds tree and brush trimmings into a power chipper; performs routine inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems; uses a variety of hand tools; fabricates and installs path facilities; operates light and moderately heavy power equipment such as power mowers, hedge clippers, cultivators, pneumatic tools, vacuum or spray equipment, aerial lifts, light trucks, dump trucks, edgers, blowers, hole augers, tractors, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, turf sweepers, and a variety of hydraulic equipment; prepares and applies fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, and plant growth regulators; checks the operation of motors, pump filters, regulators, valves, boilers, and other equipment; performs maintenance and repair work and makes adjustments to swimming pool plant equipment; tests pool water and makes necessary mechanical or chemical adjustments; performs minor plumbing and electrical maintenance as required; maintains records of work performed, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent plus two years' experience which has provided working familiarity with parks and ground maintenance methods and equipment. Possess a valid Class B California driver's license or obtain one within six (6) months of hire date with a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to pass pre-employment physical examination.
Desirable: Knowledge of methods, tools, materials and practices used in parks and grounds maintenance and construction. Ability to operate powered equipment and vehicles used in parks and ground maintenance; to maintain and repair garden tools; to perform manual labor; to perform minor plumbing and electrical maintenance; to follow oral and written directions; to maintain records; to work without supervision; to act as crew leader and to work cooperatively with others.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Application Screening: Applications, resumes, supplemental questionnaire and/ or other required documentation will be evaluated on a comparative basis. Those individuals whose materials best indicate possession of the stated requirements, may be invited to continue to the next step in the selection process.
Supplemental Questionnaire: All applicants are required to complete the questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position.
Examination Process: All applicants who demonstrate meeting the minimum qualifications for this position, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The first step in the examination process will be a computer based exam. The pass point of the exam is 70%. Applicants must pass exam in order to qualify for placement on the eligibility list. Eligibility lists maybe active for up to 1 year.
Tentative Written Exam Dates: April 18, 2023
The eligibility list will be used to fill current and future openings in this classification. Candidates who are invited to the interview process will be asked to participate in a performance skills assessment.

This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by the Laborers' International Union of North America Local 324.
CURRENT BENEFITS
Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security.
- Classic Members – Retirement formula of 2% at age 60 with a 3 year final compensation period. Effective January 1, 2020, Classic Members contribute 7% toward retirement.
- New Members – Under the new pension reform law, Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA), effective 1/1/13 those defined as New Members of PERS are eligible for the 2% at age 62 retirement formula with a 3 year final compensation period. New Members are required to contribute towards pension; effective July 1, 2019 the contribution rate is 6.75%.
Vacation: Twelve working days vacation for the first four years of service. Maximum 25 days annually after 20 years of service.
Holidays: Thirteen and one-half days per year and nine days of floating holiday time.
Sick Leave: Accrued indefinitely at the rate of one day per month. PERS service credit for unused sick upon service retirement.
Longevity: 2% at fifteen (15) years of service.
Bilingual Pay: $150 for one language and $250 for two or more languages.
Health Insurance: The City offers Kaiser and Blue Cross PPO. Effective 1/1/23, the City contributes $816.28 for employee, $1,636.63 for employee +1, and $2,161.71 for family coverage with the employee contributing a portion of the monthly premium. Please see the MOU for complete details.
Dental Insurance: The City pays 100% of the premium for dental coverage for the employee and dependents. Dental plan includes orthodontic coverage.
Vision Insurance: The City pays 100% of the premium for vision coverage for the employee and dependents.???????
Life/Disability: The City pays the premium for life and disability insurance for the employee only. Life insurance benefit is 2x annual salary up to $200,000. Voluntary, supplemental plan available for additional life insurance.
Health Club Reimbursement: The City pays up to $50.00 a month for health club membership.
Training/Education Expense Reimbursement: The City pays up to $1000 per fiscal year. See MOU for details.
Education Pay: The City pays $150/mo for AA/AS degree and $200 for BA/BS degree for degrees not required as minimum qualifications for the position.
Uniform/Safety Shoes Allowances: $600 for uniform, up to $300 for safety shoes reimbursement annually for eligible positions as outlined in the MOU.

Water Distribution - 2.5% for D-2 or 5% for D-3
Water Treatment - 5% for certification above requirements, as outlined in the MOU
Lab Director Assignment 7% for eligible employees while serving in the assignment
Flexible Staffing: Water Treatment Plant Operators positions are flexibly staffed and flexing can occur within the guidelines as outlined in the MOU.
Shift Differential - WTP Operators: $10/shift for 2nd shift or $12/shift for 3rd shift, .25/hr for overtime
