JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State at the University Park Campus is seeking Part-Time Teaching Assistants for Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy. The Teaching Assistant will coordinate all lab activities in their section.

Time commitment will range from approximately 11 to 24 hours per week depending on the number of sections (Teaching one section ~ 11 hours. Each additional section ~6 to 7 hours).

Time Commitment*:

  • Scheduled Lab meeting times: 4 hours per week

  • Scheduled Office Hours: 2 hours per week

  • Pre-Lab meetings: 1-2 hours per week

  • Specimen Preparation: 3 hours per week

  • Grading: 1-2 hour per week

  • There is often overlap of some of these responsibilities such that the average time commitment for one lab section is about 11 hours/week. For example, some specimen preparation may take place during office hours and pre-lab meeting. When teaching multiple sections of the lab, the additional time commitment for each additional lab section is 6 to 7 hours.

Job Duties:

  • Explain laboratory policies to students

  • Prepare the lab prior to the session and insure that the lab is cleaned at the end of the session

  • Prepare demonstration specimens

  • Assist students (individuals and small groups) with dissection techniques and structure identification

  • Grade laboratory assignments, quizzes and lab exams

  • Be available during scheduled extra lab study time to provide individual instruction

  • Participate in pre-lab meetings each week with other TAs and lab coordinator to review labs for the following week

  • Assist with laboratory exam set-up and clean-up

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the laboratory coordinator.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Applicants should have earned a B or better in Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy lab (or an equivalent course).

  • Must be available during the scheduled laboratory sessions.

  • Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
