Overview:
The Pathologist Assistant meets the qualifications for CLIA high complexity gross examinations and dissections of surgical pathology specimens and to assist the pathologist in performing autopsies. Photographs appropriate specimens and assists with frozen sections.
Qualifications:
Education and Work Experience:
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Candidate must have or be eligible for ASCP certification or have a minimum of 5 years experience with progressive on the job training.
  • Would consider new graduates from an approved Pathologist training program.
  • AA degree in chemical or biological science medical laboratory technology, obtained from a ABHES, NAACLS or other HHC approved organization. OR
  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. Must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR
  • 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours each of chemistry, biology and 12 hours each of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology AND laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or other HHC approved organization.
  • Experience with breast and GYN preferred.

  • ASCP or ASCP eligible preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize one or more of the following:
  • Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Meditech (if applicable to position)
  • Epic (if applicable to position)
  • Performance Manager/NetLearning
  • Laboratory Information System, such as EPIC
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team with other employees.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.


Other Requirements:

  • Working independently, organization
  • Gross examination of tissue.
  • Dissection of tissue in such a way as to preserve important pathologic findings.
  • Select pieces of tissue for sectioning and preservation, and maintenance and identification of tissue orientation during processing.
  • Performs frozen sections as needed.
  • Assists pathologists as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians and other staff members.
