Responsibilities:
Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center offers intensive residential treatment services within a secure setting. Our programs are designed to meet the needs of youth ages 7- 17 who are experiencing emotional, psychiatric and educational difficulties. In addition to our general psychiatric programs, we also offer specialty programs for youth with more serious challenges. Harbor Point and its programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities. We are licensed by The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education. We are a TRICARE®-approved and certified facility.

Position Scope
:
The Patient Advocate acts as an advocate for all patient, family members and guests. The Patient Advocate responds to concerns from patients, families and other external stakeholders and resolves complaints/grievances in a timely manner. The Patient Advocate maintains and reports grievance data to Quality Council. Under the general supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, assists in the maintenance of adequate health information systems in compliance with all applicable laws, standards and policies. The Patient Advocate demonstrates the consistent ability to maintain confidentiality and utilize the “minimum necessary” rule. The purpose of the Patient Advocate is to enhance the quality of patient care by improving the relationship between the patient and staff, increasing patient satisfaction, and reducing grievances and complaints for all parties involved. The advocacy program promotes accountability and program evaluation.

Essential Functions
:
  • Teach residents and staff about the grievance process.
  • Invetigate all complaints and grievances.
  • Compile and analyze data from submitted grievances on a systematic and scheduled basis.
  • Develop resolutions to internal and external complaints and grievances.
  • Assist with the administrative duties for record keeping.

Qualifications:
Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in the human services field or related field or two years of related experience may substitute for education.

Experience:
Experience with computerized data bases, spreadsheets and word processing is required. Must be able to perform case management, analyze, and synthesize data for overall activities of the department. Ability to communicate professionally, verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with diverse and stressful situations in a calm manner. Ability to manage multiple high priority tasks effectively. Ability to perform duties with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Ability to adapt and respond to a variety of activities and situations concurrently.
