Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
Provides comprehensive coordination and management of the financial aspect of treatment. Serves as a patient advocate and liaison to ensure comprehensive understanding of the financial scope of treatment. Works alongside providers, patients, staff, and practice administration to determine and execute the most appropriate financial solutions for treatment including but not limited to drug recovery, copay assistance, hospital charity, etc. Provides oversight and management of drug procurement for indigent and underinsured populations. Manages and tracks assistance procured for all patients. Works independently with minimal supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Responsible for comprehensive patient financial management for oral, injectable and intravenous medications as prescribed
Tracks, procures and maintains patient assistance and free drug throughout the course of patients’ treatments (often lifelong)
Estimates patient responsibility and notifies patient of financial obligations prior to and throughout course of treatment. Answers patient questions regarding billing and insurance accurately and completely. Advises patient on payment options including payment plans, manufacturer assistance, grants, etc.
Determines necessity for copay assistance and free drug for patients through Patient Assistance Programs. Enrolls patients, obtains and applies assistance/free drug in a timely manner
Manages drug procurement for indigent and underinsured populations, as well as for accounts with medical necessity denials.
Collects, organizes, tracks and maintains appropriate documentation related to patient assistance or foundation applications as well as total funds and free drug secured. Calculates and compiles ROI of time and services provided and presents as needed.
Develops and maintains close working relationships with all stakeholders in the drug recovery and copay assistance process including patients, physicians, other staff and drug manufacturers/foundations.
Educates physicians, clinical staff, and support staff on patient assistance programs.
Understands and complies with Information Security and HIPPA policies and procedures at all times.
Communicates effectively and professionally with all parties, including a diverse patient population, in both oral and written formats.
Role models professional behaviors, approaches and attitudes at all times – particularly in stressful and conflicting situations.
Works autonomously. Able to multi-task and prioritize under stressful situations. Possesses strong time management skills.
Employment Qualifications
Required Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Education:
4 year/ Bachelors Degree
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Years and Type of Experience:
4 years experience in a healthcare setting
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Microsoft products (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint); strong interpersonal skills; ability to clearly explain complex topics
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1+ years experience using EPIC; ability to read and interpret explanation of benefits; experience completing prior authorizations
