Education/Training/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree-preferred
- Two years hospital or health care related experience required
- Demonstrated computer skills (including Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Knowledge of ICD10 coding and medical terminology preferred
- Able to work independently and within a team atmosphere.
- Well organized, self-motivated individual with a positive attitude
- Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension and expression
- Ability to work effectively with all payor and hospital personnel
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
Primary Function:
The Patient Financial Advocate is responsible for assisting patients and/or families to access financial resources. The Advocate assists Social Services with guidance to those patients who may qualify for assistance through state, county, and federal programs. The Advocate is also available to patients and families to answer questions regarding their insurance, give estimates of co-pay amounts, and to aid patients in obtaining prior authorizations for services.
Primary Job Duties:
- Reviews and verifies all patient demographics in Cerner and input all necessary corrections
- Reviews completeness and accuracy of insurance information in Cerner as completed by registration staff during admission process in Cerner. Makes any necessary corrections
- Verify health insurance coverage, including all supplemental coverage, for all cancer center patients using payer websites when possible according to established procedures and timeframes
- Utilize knowledge of insurance carrier requirements to ensure patient eligibility and adequacy of benefits
- Ensure that referral, precert or initial authorization for accounts according to established procedures and timeframes when required by the insurance carrier for proper reimbursement
- Interact with Physicians/NP, RN’s, other cancer center staff when
- Refer patients to outside contractors for Medicaid eligibility screening upon discovery of a non-covered patient
- Assist and refer patients to contractors for completion of Financial Assistance when appropriate.
- Provide financial counseling to patients
- Report registration errors to the appropriate staff
Customer Service Requirements:
- Communicate financial responsibility, including current and prior balances, to patient in a positive and professional manner
- Notify appropriate registration staff of amounts to be collected on the date of service
General Requirements:
- Position requires working knowledge of all insurance verification, pre-cert numbers and contracts
- Document all actions, interactions, patient data & insurance information in the specified fields as outlined in the NoVA Documentation Standards document according to established procedures and timeframes
- Maintain daily work & quality levels outlined by the NoVA Productivity & Quality Standards
- Scan and shred all patient & eligibility information after completion of NoVA processes
- Elevate account issues & barriers to the NoVA Manager to ensure timely resolution of issues
- Notify all necessary departments of insurance, and patient demographic updates
- Perform additional tasks delegated by the NoVA Unit Manager
- Apply the concept of teamwork to ensure that interactions between NoVA staff and other employees are positive and constructive
