Job SummaryThe Michigan Medicine Capacity Operations and Real-time Engagement Center (M2C2) is the hub for inpatient operations related to system capacity management in addition to monitoring of key patient quality and safety metrics. The Clinical Expediter plays a pivotal role in the center to remove barriers to inpatient progression through their expected length of stay, to improve patient access and to enhance quality of care using clinical expertise, leadership, situational and organizational awareness, and critical thinking skills. The Clinical Expediter works with other healthcare providers and patients in a respectful, collaborative, and supportive manner to achieve patient flow and safety priorities.

Responsibilities*
The Clinical Expediter will:
Recognize and triage alerts and incorporate situational awareness using electronic health record (e.g., Epic); specialized tiles, dashboards, and monitors in the center; and other clinical resources
Promote proactive inpatient care progression and escalate tasks that could impact care or discharge timeline by expediting, prioritizing, mediating, and resolving clinical issues
Remove barriers to patient care progression through the planned length of stay (LOS)
Manage deviations from patient care paths using standard operating procedures and applying clinical expertise
Resolve patient care bottlenecks, variation in service standards, optimize prioritization with support services, and a variety of clinical departments; enhance and improve communication and coordination of care within multidisciplinary teams
Provide leadership and collaboration with M2C2 colleagues, providers, and nursing leaders to address relevant clinical and discharge issues
Optimize use of offsite inpatient sites of care, ambulatory, and home-based care settings to improve capacity through the management of alerts identifying patient candidates for these sites
Collaborate with M2C2 operations and acute care leadership to identify and to participate in executing continuous process improvement strategies to reduce LOS delay trends, support quality initiatives, and enhance patient quality measures and safety
Skills You Have
MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT, etc.)
Demonstrated experience with the electronic health record
Ability to develop effective relationships with range of stakeholders and use influence to resolve issues
Strong critical thinking skills
Experience in risk management and root cause analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Required Qualifications*
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field such as Nursing, Social Work, respiratory therapy, etc.
Experience: Four or more years of clinical experience in an acute-care facility, preferably in inpatient care, with the most recent assignment within the past three years
Current fluency with entering patient care data and abstracting data from an electronic health record (e.g., Epic)
Ability to develop effective relationship with a range of stakeholders including clinical department leaders and staff
Desired Qualifications*
Experience in patient flow, such as within capacity management
Training in performance improvement
Background in data interpretation
Additional Information
The position will report to the Administrative Manager Senior within the Office of Capacity Management.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
