Peer Support Specialist

The Family Counseling Center of Fulton County, a mental and behavioral health clinic located in the heart of the Mohawk Valley is seeking candidates for Peer Support Specialist for our Gloversville, NY location. The organization, founded in 1976, works with individuals, children, and families throughout a six-county area with focus on clients in the Fulton and Montgomery County region. Over the past 45 years, the organization has built deep roots with community partners and become a trusted source for support, focusing on the individual empowerment of clients.
Peer Support Specialist are those who have been successful in the mental wellness or recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Peer Support Specialist extend the reach of treatment beyond the clinical setting into the everyday environment of those seeking a successful, sustained mental wellness or recovery process. Peer Support Specialist engage in a wide range of activities including, but not limited to: Advocating; sharing resources and building social skills; building community and other relationships; leading life skills groups; mentoring and setting goals through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment. Peer Support Specialist help clients become and stay engaged in the mental wellness or recovery process while reducing the need likelihood of crisis or relapse.
This Full-Time, hourly position is located in Gloversville, NY and has a scheduled 40-hour work week during the Agencies hours of operation Monday-Friday.
Qualifications:
- High School Graduate/Equivalency Required.
- Must meet the eligibility requirements to obtain and complete Peer Credentialing
- Certified Peer Recovery Advocate (CRPA) preferred or in process.
- NY Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) preferred or in process
- One year of Human Service experience preferred.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
- An individual does not need to be in recovery him/herself, but must be able to confer empathy through lived experiences.
- Proficiency with basic computer and smart phone applications
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google and familiar with electronic health records
- Willingness to learn and follow Agency’s standards of practice
- Ability to successfully pass the exclusion screening and background check
- Demonstrable ability to connect with and provide support to a diverse client population
