Job description
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a first-class pipe fitter in the ship repair industry.
- Must have all tools necessary to accomplish pipe welding, i.e., electrode holder, gloves, and weld shield.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to weld certify IAW Mil-Std-248 in the following metal groups:
- CUNI, buttweld, and socket weld
- Stainless, buttweld, and socket weld
- Steel, buttweld, and socket weld
- Aluminum, buttweld, and socket weld
- Must have a working knowledge of pipe joint design IAW Mil-Std 22D

- The Pipe Welder is required to certify to IAW GTAW and SMAW procedures and has the ability to produce first-pass yield when welding on any piping system, regardless of the material type or joint design. The Pipe Welder is also responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality, and in a professional manner.
- Assure that the tank/ compartment has an updated safe for hot work tickets and that requirement of the ticket have been met. (Example: ventilation, lighting, safety equipment, etc.)
Assure that the conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written. (Example: fuel run back, unsafe working conditions, etc. - Assure that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at the location of repairs.
- Assure that any other safety issues complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (For example special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work-related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.)
- Assure that Torch Safety Procedures, including testing, are utilized for all torch work.
- Assure that fire watches are assigned and maintained in the proper position.
- Assure that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.)
- Assure that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
- Assure that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
- Assure that a 30-minute cool-down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
