The Lakota Group is seeking a Mid to Senior Level Historic Preservation Planner with at least five years of professional preservation planning experience. Candidates should be highly creative self-starters, possess strong writing and communication skills, and have a passion and desire to learn and grow into the preservation planning profession and the business at all levels.

Job responsibilities, include but are not limited to:

  • Manage projects (and clients) concurrently and adjust to dynamic project needs, depending on project type or scale.
  • Oversee Lakota associates and sub-consultants when necessary and be accountable for the successful completion of projects and production of deliverables.
  • Work with Lakota Principals and senior staff to manage and track project budgets and invoicing.
  • Take an active lead in participating in client presentations and prospective project interviews when necessary.
  • Seek out leadership roles and speaking opportunities in professional organizations.
  • Take on internal operations roles to enhance Lakota’s key capabilities.
  • Promote teamwork among other Lakota team members.
  • Work with Lakota Principals and senior staff to develop new business activities, assist in preparing proposals, maintain client relationships, and establish new contacts.

Skills Required

  • Educational background and/or work experience in historic preservation planning, including historic preservation plans, survey and documentation, research, historic district design guidelines, context statements, and National Register nominations.
  • Experience in HABS/HAER documentation a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to work on other urban planning assignments with a preservation element when needed, including comprehensive plans, downtown plans, arts and culture plans, and neighborhood plans.
  • Strong writing, communication, and project management skills necessary.
  • Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access required. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Geographic Information Systems, digital survey technologies, and ArcGIS StoryMaps is a plus.

Education/Experience/Certification

  • 5-7 years of professional experience
  • Preferred: Masters in Historic Preservation, Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related field from an accredited program
  • AICP or AIA accreditation a plus

Lakota offers a flexible work environment and a comprehensive benefits package. This position’s principal office location is in Chicago, Illinois, although remote locations may be considered. This position requires some travel.
