PM Homework Café® Teacher/Mentor

Position Summary:

Our campus has an opening for a PM Homework Café® teacher to motivate homework completion and help facilitate executive functioning skills in our Homework Café® for grades 6-12 students. Candidate must have positive energy, the ability to function in a high-paced environment, be calm and open for feedback, as well as a self-starter. They must respect the personhood of the student, creating connective relationships while maintaining authority, boundaries, and discipline. Must maintain a clean and organized milieu space for students to learn. Our ideal candidate has exceptional classroom facilitation skills, fluent computer skills, and is an outgoing, well-organized individual who is eager to work in a highly dynamic, energetic school setting.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Being able to be in-person on campus from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.

  • Monitor and help students’ progress in the completion of homework.

  • Communicate with teachers and parents on student progress.

  • Promote a positive social environment for students.

  • Develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication with parents.

  • Contribute to and benefit from the campus community.

  • Practice professionalism through ongoing professional development, reflection, and continuous improvement.

  • Significant student mentoring.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience with Special Education and Youth Mental Health background a plus
  • Experience in group facilitation and activity planning with an adolescent population
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, a great communicator, and a self-starter
  • Higher knowledge of Math, Science, and Spanish subject is a plus

Mentor students by: supporting their social-emotional skills, facilitating student connections and intentional student programming activities; providing executive functioning support and reinforcement, enabling students to progress in their independent work and grow as learners; offering guidance that allows students to become self-directed and positive community members utilizing our school-wide learner outcomes.


Specific Job Outcomes


Provide social-emotional mentoring to all students and facilitate a positive Homework Café climate.

  • Create a positive, safe, and belonging-centered environment for students by teaching social-emotional learning skills and honoring the students’ unique story.
  • Facilitate a group space with confidence and engagement.
  • Demonstrate the 4 Pillars of Mentorship: having a compassionate mindset, being student-centered, providing intentional guidance, and engaging a team approach.
  • Develop strong relationships with all students and respond supportively to social-emotional needs and peer conflicts when they arise. Request administration support when appropriate.
  • Review and stay current with student information in the student information system (SIS).
  • Implement healthy boundaries with students, communicating both support and accountability.

Monitor and assist students’ progress in the completion of independent work.

  • Circulate throughout the Homework Café space(s) to:
    • Check-in with students to see if assistance is needed
    • Monitor student progress on work completion,
    • Keep students on task in completing homework goals,
    • Provide support with finding resources, getting organized, getting started, etc.
  • Support students in organizing and completing their independent work utilizing the Learner Management System (LMS), such as by utilizing their Canvas to-do list.
  • Scaffold?students’?executive functioning skill development, finding strategies that support each student’s individual needs and challenges.
  • Understand each student’s learner profile, including their MAP and?Mindprint?assessment scores to provide personalized support.??(If appropriate, can help alongside the leadership team in conducting MAP/Mindprint testing.)

Provide student social opportunities by supporting or organizing campus programming.

  • Encourage social interaction and support the building of social connections among students.
  • Use different engagement strategies to motivate students to attend planned activities.
  • Understand that students socialize in different ways and accommodate with diverse options.
  • Collaborate with your leadership team in supporting, consulting on, planning, and facilitating monthly programming, such as:
    • Daily activities (i.e. table games, crafts) for students to participate in,
    • Student-driven clubs,
    • Academic and social events, field trips, and long-term initiatives,
    • Student meetings per month (which can be co-led with students or staff),
    • Community Action Program (CAP) events.

Communicate with teachers, staff, and families on student progress.

  • Maintain communication with campus teachers to assist with each student’s progress. Communicate?with teachers:
    • To celebrate successes,
    • To share challenges and concerns with homework completion,
    • By submitting relevant confidential student notes,
    • If Extended Homework Café may be needed,
    • Regarding student social opportunities.
  • Contribute to Student Team Meetings & IROC Meeting discussions for insight into Homework Café behavior and individual development.
  • Communicate with parents, as needed, regarding homework or social-emotional challenges and opportunities in the Homework Café.

Practice professionalism.

  • Attend work regularly and on time.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Exhibit a high level of aptitude with technology.
  • Maintain a practice of professional reflection for growth.
  • Demonstrate personal accountability and hard work through role modeling.
  • If the campus does not have a DHC, attend leadership meetings and DHC Positional Calls.

Maintain a clean, organized, and optimal learning environment for students.

  • Spot clean and pick up trash throughout the day.
  • Check that supplies are full and submit an order for materials when needed.
  • Check that computers are in working condition and plugged in when not in use.
  • Clean and disinfect tables as needed.
  • Straighten, organize, and put away any materials left out at the end of the day.
