Job Title: Cadet – Training Unit (1100- J#5512, 3469)

Department: Police Department

Reports To: Deputy Superintendent of Police, Training Unit Lieutenant

Salary: $41,600 per year (40 hours per week)

Union: Ordinance; Non-union, Civilian/Non-sworn

Hours: 40 hours per week, flexible (nights/weekend) as needed

Program Timeline: Maximum Two-Year Program

SUMMARY

The Lowell Police Department is seeking three Cadets to work as part of the COPS Office Community Policing Development (CPD) Microgrants Program. These positions will be essential to enhancing the department’s ability to engage in community policing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Attend training sessions and civil service preparation classes.
  • Complete physical assessments.
  • Maintain records.
  • Assist with community events.
  • Complete problem-oriented policing project.
  • Make frequent contact with residents, police officers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • Other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Lowell resident between the ages of 19 ½ and 23.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • U.S. Citizen or naturalized citizen.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, medical and psychological exam, and a drug test.
  • Must be able to meet the physical qualifications required for appointment to the Lowell Police Department.
  • Interest in law enforcement.
  • Applicants pursuing higher education preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

This position requires the Cadet to perform all functions contained in this job description.
