Do you want to join a team of spirited professionals working toward a shared goal of student success? UVU is currently seeking to fill a vacant position of Police Officer Public Safety. This position would enforce local, state, and federal laws and ensures compliance with university policies. Provides security for personnel, real property, and equipment. Investigate and document crimes/incidents; document and preserve evidence; and provide legal testimony. May be assigned to any shift. May perform campus patrol or serve as substation, victim/witness assistance, or crime prevention officer.
This position can also be filled by a Police Officer Cadet if the cadet is on track to complete the required training programs. Police cadets provide valuable support services to UVU law enforcement officials and train under the guidance of sworn police officers. They may support police operations, such as traffic control, work on criminal investigations and perform administrative duties at police stations.
To be filled as a Police Officer applicant must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent. Must be a P.O.S.T graduate or able to successfully complete P.O.S.T. Law Enforcement Academy. Applicant must be currently Certified Law Enforcement Officer or certifiable as a State of Utah Law Enforcement Officer. Applicants with contingent offer will be subjected to a psychological test and thorough background check. Applicant must also be a Certified Law Enforcement Officer or certifiable as a State of Utah Law Enforcement Officer.
To be filled as a Police Officer Cadet applicant must meet the following minimum qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required. Must be able to be certified as a State of Utah Law Enforcement Officer. Applicants with contingent offer may be subjected to a psychological test as determined by the department. A thorough background check will be conducted.
Police Officer
Patrols university property, in a vehicle or on foot, to provide security and traffic law enforcement. Handles public assistance calls, such as assisting motorists, investigating traffic collisions, directing traffic, resolving personal disputes, keeping the peace, and other requests of the public.- Arrests violators of the law and issues citations. Records activity by way of first and supplementary reports, and other required forms.
- Conducts formal investigations of criminal activity.
- Performs public relations activities as required to satisfy public inquiry.
- Testifies in court of law and at other formal hearings as well as attends a minimum of forty hours of sanctioned training each year to maintain Utah Peace Officer Certification.
- Dedicates 40 hours per week participating in Peace Officer Standards Training at the facility in Salt Lake City, UT. Performs rigorous physical conditioning, including but not limited to self-defense, boxing, weight training, swimming, and aerobic activities. Studies driving techniques, first aid, crime scene control and how to use firearms. Participates in classes on laws, ethics, report writing and policing philosophy.
- Additional duties may include but are not limited to: Assist police officers with road hazards, traffic accidents and crime scenes, participate in ride-along with police officers to learn how to handle real-life situations. Police cadets may also patrol parades, school functions, and a variety of public events. Other duties may include helping with dispatch, enforcing parking requirements and informing students and young adults about police officer responsibilities.
