The University of Montana invites applications for the Pre-Medical Sciences Student Support Manager. The individual in this position will assist the Director of Pre-Medical Sciences with recruiting, student advising/support, communications and program presentations, and day-to-day operations, as well as the collection and analysis of programmatic data related to UM Pre-Medical Sciences student success and medical school application data. This Student Support Manager will supervise numerous student volunteers who will work with Pre-Medical Sciences on improving best practices and fostering communication between pre-health care students. This Student Support Manager will also help guide and support the large group of faculty mentors and staff advisors that comprise Pre-Medical Sciences. In addition to supervisory duties, this administrative person will be responsible for data analytics as described below. Admission to a health care professional school; medical, dental, veterinary, PA, etc. is an ever-changing world and only by frequently assessing our advising/mentoring practices and comparing them to National norms will we stay competitive as a program. The Student Support Manager will also help coordinate the marketing efforts for our program going forward. This includes interactions with UM’s marketing program, design of effective marketing materials, maintenance of social media, and websites.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing year-round services to all enrolled and prospective Pre-Medical Sciences students.
  • Working with the Pre-Medical Science Director and the program’s team of advisor and mentors to support student success, including analysis of programmatic data from both UM students and US medical schools. This will focus on workforce predictions, target health professions school evolution, delineation of funds available for students, improving shadowing portals and opportunities, improving pre-health prerequisite curricula.
  • Facilitating program growth through strategic communications, marketing, recruitment and collaborative efforts with high school teachers and counselors, tribal members and education advocates, health care professionals and the general Montana community.

Position Details

  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Starting salary for this position is $60,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field in addition to two (2) years of closely related experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills and the ability to forge and foster professional and constructive relationships.
  • Ability to effectively represent UM’s Pre-Medical sciences program via presentation to prospective students and their parents, pre-health and science teachers and advisors, career fair attendees, high school counselors, tribal members and education advocates, health care professionals and the general Montana community.
  • Ability to assist in advising UM Pre-Medical sciences students and work with the program’s established team of academic and professional advisors and mentors.
  • Ability to establish rapport, facilitate academic decision making, make appropriate referrals and monitor academic progress. As a new member of the advising team, the learning curve will be steep, but the first year expectation is that this employee will serve as more of a triage expert, getting students to the correct advisor and answering basic questions. In successive years, this employee will take on more difficult advising.
  • Ability to collect and analyze programmatic data relevant to both the medical school application process and the academic preparation of Pre-Medical sciences students.
  • Ability to create and maintain student support programs and services for UM Pre-Medical sciences students, including: mentoring, financial aid portfolios, and experiential training.
  • Organizational and time management skills necessary to multitask, compile and complete educational and recruitment materials, program analytics, record-keeping, tracking, and filing.
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment, communication tools and software (particularly Microsoft Office tools including Word, Outlook, Excel, Publisher, Access).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of campus and its health career programs.
  • Knowledge of Appreciative Advising as designed by Jennifer Bloom (National Expert on advising).
  • Knowledge of various careers in Health Care and length and rigor of the training.
