Job Description –Preparator
Reports to: Registrar
Employment Category: Full-time, non-exempt
Salary: $20/hr
Summary: The Lead Preparator is an integral position in the Collections Department, responsible for the well-being and care of the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. Professional knowledge of museum/art handling best practices is expected. Creative problem solving, being detail oriented, and having the ability to make the most from limited resources are key to success for the whole department. The Lead Preparator plays a key role in the exhibition planning process and meets regularly with all parties involved—Curators, Exhibition Manager, Registrar, Facilities staff, artists, etc.—to assist with formulating schedules to meet deadlines. When necessary, the Lead Preparator works within budgets to hire and supervise freelance art handlers or work with and train temporary staff for collections projects.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Prepare objects for display and storage
· Work closely with Curators and Registrar on exhibition development, planning, design, object security, packing, and storage
· Fabricate exhibition mounts, furniture, crates, and temporary walls as needed
· Install and deinstall museum exhibitions, including gallery lighting
· Manage and monitor the daily condition and appearance of all exhibitions
· Work with the Registrar, Facilities,and Security departments to help train staff in emergency recovery procedures
· Work with the Registrar to coordinate and pack outgoing loans
· Keep up to date on new industry technologies, tools, and archival materials
· Manage all collections-related supplies and order inventory as needed
· Work with and train interns and freelance art handlers/contractors
Qualifications:
· Minimum 2-3 years experience as art preparator, preferably in a museum setting. Significant experience with and understanding of best museum practices in art handling and installation
· Strong carpentry skills
· Working knowledge of gallery lighting
· Working knowledge of audio/visual technology and equipment
· Ability to build consensus through collaboration, listens and responds appropriately to others, and asks questions and offers input for positive results
· Ability to adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles during exhibition installations
· Capacity to work independently or in a team setting with a high attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
· Effectively handle multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change
· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as strong listening skills and ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals via email, phone, and in person
· Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted and be on feet for extended periods of time
