Principal Analytical Scientist
The Pfizer global Process Development Centre (PDC) has an exciting new opportunity for an experienced and skilled Analytical Scientist to join our dynamic and innovative team based in Cork, Ireland. The successful candidates will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing scientific leadership in the development and commercialisation of new API processes and technology. You will be expected to contribute to the overall leadership of the PDC, including leading strategic initiatives, analytical technology transfers and troubleshooting for the Pfizer internal and external global manufacturing network, and operational management to ensure the smooth & efficient running of the department.
Scientific and Business Strategy:
- Provide scientific & business leadership to ensure development projects are supported with appropriate technology solutions.
- Design and execution of laboratory experimentation, interpretation of data to drive experimental plans and ability to utilize electronic tools (electronic notebook and analytical software) to gather and document information. Provide scientific and technical oversight to staff to solve challenging problems.
- Promote and foster innovative development of new analytical technologies that advance the speed and cost effectiveness of API process development and commercialization.
- Collaborate with peers and other global teams to ensure new technology is optimally applied to deliver the PDC portfolio in partnership with project teams.
- Apply highly specialised analytical skills to support chemical process development, pilot plant demonstrations and full-scale qualification/commercial batches.
- Define and implement analytical aspects of the Control strategy to deliver successful commercialisation of projects. Focus on impurity qualification, mutagenic impurities, elemental impurities etc.
Leadership and Influence:
- Represent PDC to ensure good collaboration, proactive engagement and positive relationships are developed and maintained in matrix forums and outside of Pfizer Inc.
- Strong influencing skills, with the ability to drive strategic/technical decisions through effective communication.
- Proactively seek to develop best working practices through establishing networks and interfaces across sites and with industrial and academic partners.
Resource Management:
- Utilize awareness of PDC priorities to assign resources & set priorities to ensure project deliverables are met.
- Partner with relevant global business functions including chemists and engineers to ensure application of available tools for the PDC portfolio.
- Facilitate and provide opportunities for staff to learn and apply current and future technologies.
Portfolio and Project Management:
- Ensure line activities are consistent with endorsed activities and aligned with portfolio goals. Communicate broader business perspectives to manage project activities and deliverables.
- Project manage the analytical development aspects for projects.
- Provide analytical oversight and guidance to service providers and partners to facilitate the delivery of PDC projects.
- Strategic match of technical talent (skills and experience) with task; leverage broader expert group resources to help with project deliverables.
Staff Development:
- Create an environment where Pfizer values are visible, lead by example.
- Contribute to staff training including orientation to new tasks, information, technical skill, SOPs/guidance, mentoring etc.
- Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with all safety and housekeeping policies. Advocate for safety and visibly support all department and site safety policies.
Other requirements of the role:
- Provide analytical method development expertise for methods that require development or further optimisation.
- Analytical documentation including SOPs, methods, protocols, and reports. This includes review and approval.
- Laboratory write ups completion, checking and approval.
- Training of new and existing staff where required.
- Providing analytical expertise and guidance for other members of staff especially regarding method development activities.
Qualifications & Experience:
Must-have
- A PhD in analytical chemistry combined with 9 years’ relevant analytical chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical industry, ideally with a background in analytical method development; or a BSc/MSc in a degree with significant analytical focus plus 12 years’ relevant analytical chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical industry, ideally with a background in research and development.
- Be recognized as a strong scientific leader within analytical chemistry discipline – expert knowledge in a range of analytical techniques such as HPLC-MS, GC-MS, spectroscopy, and physical techniques.
- Experience of method validation and method transfers, including the generation and review of AMTE and validation protocols and reports.
- Innovative and creative approach to problem solving (both business & scientific), with ability to impact and influence within PDC and outside of the department.
- Experienced with CMC requirements and how these are satisfied with a focus on specification setting and impurity qualification
- Ability to lead in a fast-changing environment & communicate the positive advantages of change.
Nice to have
- A strong background in impurity identification and quantitation using LC-MS/MS (e.g., QTOF, Triple Quadrupole) to support the development and troubleshooting of chemical processes.
- Experience in GTI method development and quantification.
It is expected that interviews will be held immediately after the closing date.
