Principal Marketing Communications Specialist - Brand and Copywriting, Diabetes
Job description
A Day in the Life
- Serve as the Brand and Marcom partner in the creation and development of omnichannel marketing campaigns, promotional materials, and direct-to-consumer, HCP, and other business communications—all consistent with Medtronic brand standards
- Work closely with both cross-functional internal teams and external agency partners on strategies that leverage the latest consumer and digital media trends
- Support project owners in bringing our brand to life through visual and verbal storytelling that advances our brand and aligns with our business strategies
- Possibly conceive, develop and execute original marketing content and campaigns in collaboration with marketing partners
- Drive design brainstorms and work sessions to push boundaries and explore in-house solutions
- Manage video and photo shoots, including photo markups and video edits
- Serve as the agency liaison/conduit on projects and provide detailed markups/edits to creative executions
- Maintain and promote an internal awareness of industry trends and design solutions, along with a focus on processes and tools
- Confidently convey ideas and concepts, articulating and defending rationale behind proposed creative solutions to all key stakeholders
- Proactively solicit feedback from others and offer thoughtful critiques that help elevate work product and push creative boundaries
- Ensure the use of analytics and customer data to navigate direction and make creative decision
- Planning, implementing, and executing marketing communications programs and product launches that help meet business goals and strategies. Involvement may include all elements of the marketing communications mix (i.e., product messaging and concepts, print and electronic promotional tools, print and online advertising, conventions related tactics, patient education materials, and digital media content delivered via mobile apps, websites, social media channels, video, animations, email, etc.)
- Supervising writers, designers, and/or agencies. Managing the internal review process for assigned projects. Schedule/track progress against plan, and assembling necessary resources to accomplish task. Monitor and report project status to product managers and communications manager. Measure effectiveness of tactics. Manage resources and budgets efficiently to get maximum return on investment. Track actual spending to estimates, and report status upon completion of programs/projects.
- Maintaining strong, productive working relationships with product managers; legal, regulatory, and clinical partners; and external business alliances. Develop and maintain an understanding of what communications vehicles are most effective for all external customers and within the medical technology industry.
- Understanding and applying the elements of both design and writing excellence. Manage the writing and editing of materials to transform features into benefits or translate complex product concepts into understandable language that meet an informational need. Conduct appropriate research to test messages and/or communications content.
- Minimal travel, up to 15%

- Bachelors degree required
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant, corporate experience in integrated marketing, creative or marketing communications, journalism, branding or advertising, or Masters' degree with a minimum of 5 years'
Nice to Have
- Bachelor's degree in Advertising, Marketing Communications, Journalism or another related field in art, writing, or mass media and communications
- MBA preferred

- Demonstration of visual and verbal aptitudes in effective brand expression, with a mastery of both words and images
- Proven experience in managing and directing graphic designers, copywriters, and agency partners
- Excellent interpersonal skills to influence strategies and stakeholders and to enable effective relationships across a variety of functions and departments
- Ability to work with all levels of management and employees and balance assertive, diplomatic counsel—from senior leadership to peers and business partners
- Experience in successfully managing budgets and outside resources and vendors
- Strong oral and written communication skills with a professional command of presentations
- Strong relationship management and organizational skills
- Ability to plan and manage projects efficiently and effectively
- Ability to work with complex and sensitive information
- Exceptional ability to work independently and excel under pressure and tight deadlines
- Proficiency with business software: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other corporate software
- Familiarity with creative software: Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other multi-media and design software
- Proven ability to work as a liaison between marketing and creative teams
- Any hands-on skills in both visual design and copywriting/editing a plus
- Strong knowledge and understanding of integrated marketing, with an ability to synthesize marketing goals into effective creative expression and communications plans
- Knowledge or training in art or design, and in writing disciplines and proficiencies (professional understanding of grammar, syntax, etc.)
- Familiarity with diabetes, healthcare marketing, and the medical device industry
- Comprehension of global/international marketing communication principles and cultural issues
- Understanding and experience in marketing to both physicians and consumers
- Experience in developing consumer marketing communications and strategies and implementing programs using multi-channel approaches, including print, digital, and social and experiential media
