Purpose of Position:

The Vessel & Piping Engineer is a key member of the Engineering team and will be based in Bridgewater NJ. This individual will be the subject matter expert in pressure vessel and piping design for the Messer Americas bulk business. This role will drive best practices and standardization, in cryogenic pressure vessel and process piping design, to achieve optimal safety, quality, and reliability for the Messer Americas bulk business.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Fulfils the role of subject matter expert in the design, specification, selection, construction, commissioning and troubleshooting of cryogenic and process piping and pressure vessels.
  • Responsible for qualifying cryogenic pressure vessel equipment suppliers/vendors, auditing vendors to ensure compliance with company standards and requirements to assure consistency and quality across all approved suppliers.
  • Develop, review, and own piping and cryogenic pressure vessel and piping standards as relates to ASME code, oxygen cleanliness, and construction methods employed within the Messer Americas bulk business.
  • Oversight of third-party consultants that support special requirements in the design, specification, selection, erection, commissioning and troubleshooting of piping and cryogenic pressure vessels.
  • Technical support to Messer Americas bulk operations with respect to cryogenic pressure vessel & piping operational issues and provide expert assistance in troubleshooting.
  • Provides mechanical design expertise in the design of structures/supports for installation in high seismic areas.
  • Provides project specific support through the specification of piping and cryogenic pressure vessel systems/equipment, detail design, and commissioning/testing technical support.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience with cryogenic pressure vessel and process piping design.
  • Experience with cryogenic pressure vessel design and fabrication is required. Similar design experience with pressure vessels in the petrochemical industry will be considered.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of/experience with national pressure vessel design, fabrication and inspection codes and industry standards such as ASME BPVC-VIII, ASME National Board Inspection Code, and CGA S-1.3 Pressure Relief Device Standards is required.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of/experience with process piping design and construction codes such as ASME B31.3 Process Piping, ASME BPVC-IX Welding, Brazing, & Fusing Procedures, and ASME PCC-2 Repair of Pressure Equipment & Piping is required.
  • Knowledge of oxygen materials compatibility national codes and standards such as CGA G-4.1, ASTM G88 Guide of Designing Systems for Oxygen Service, ASTM G94 Evaluating Metals for Oxygen Service, and ASTM G93 Cleaning Methods and Cleanliness Levels for Oxygen Enriched Environments is required.
  • Knowledge of the determination of seismic and wind loads for structures in accordance with International Building Code and ASCE 7-16.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • 2D CAD/AutoCAD and 3D Modeling (Solidworks, Autodesk Fusion 360) experience is required.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office, MS Project)
  • Working knowledge with Process Safety Reviews (Hazop), Engineering Management of Change, and Risk Assessment techniques (SIL, LOPA) is required

Other qualifications:

  • Additional graduate level course work in mechanical design, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer is desirable.
  • Professional Engineering license is highly desirable.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI) certification is highly desirable.
