Job Summary - Principal Systems Architect

Leads, consults or oversees multiple architectural engagements working on multiple projects in a technical domain as a technical expert or internal consultant. You will work on highly complex projects that require in-depth knowledge of two or more specialized architecture areas, including locomotive systems and computer networks. You will work across multiple technical or functional domains. Work closely with several other internal groups and external industry groups to develop and implement effective locomotive architectures.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

• Chair weekly, cross functional locomotive architecture meeting to coordinate changes, review failures for improvement opportunities and establish technology roadmap.
• Work with internal application development teams to establish vision for long term solutions and immediate functionality for upcoming sprints.
• Lead and participate as needed in industry committees focused on locomotive systems and long term planning of technologies.
• Work with key suppliers and vendors to establish relationships, guide their technology roadmaps and partner on new projects.
• Lead and coordinate the technical and business discussions relative to future architecture direction across multiple teams or complex applications infrastructure.
• Analyze, design and develop a roadmap and implementation plan based upon a current vs. future state in a cohesive architecture viewpoint.
• Review and/or analyze and develop architecture at domain level and across multiple teams.
• Contribute to the development of software, data, and technology.
• Contribute to the designs and deployment of infrastructure solutions meeting standardization, consolidation, TCO, security, regulatory compliance and application system qualities, for different businesses.
• Lead the research and evaluation of emerging technology, industry and market trends to assist in project development and/or operational support activities to for multiple teams or complex scenarios.
• Provide leadership, technology guidance and mentors others throughout the domain.
• Participate in enterprise infrastructure strategy development, including environmental analysis, opportunity identification, value cases and business innovation portfolio development.
• Typically lead moderately complex projects and participates in larger, more complex initiatives.
• Solve complex technical and operational problems.
• Influence Senior Leadership to adopt new ideas, products, and/or approaches
• Collaborate with application developers and their leadership in support of tactical and strategic middleware initiatives to identify, define, develop and implement new enterprise middleware infrastructures and standards / procedures to streamline the existing software development process to improve performance and quality
• Drive efficiency by identifying self-service automation opportunities and promote DevOps
• Responsible for overseeing that the installation, configuration, upgrade, testing and capacity planning, performance tuning, and the debugging of systems is performed according to standards
• Conduct critical analysis of technology and associated operational processes, with a view to recommending designs & strategies that will improve service, lower costs, and prevent unforeseen operational issues
• Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager
  

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
• 9 or more years of experience in locomotive design and architecture, computer networking and Positive Train Control

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate Degree

• 7 or more years of experience in locomotive design and architecture, computer networking and Positive Train Control

Knowledge and Skills

• Expert knowledge of locomotive architecture and onboard systems and applications
• Strong knowledge of networking protocols and systems
• Strong knowledge of network security solutions and practices
• Strong capability to work with others across an organization and industry and influence the direction of technology developments
