Position Summary
The Winthrop Group has an immediate opening for a full-time Processing Archivist in New York City to arrange and describe the Jack and Irene Delano papers held at Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Artists Jack and Irene Delano’s work documents and celebrates Puerto Rican history and culture in the 20th century. The archivist will ensure access to these important archival materials by implementing processing and preservation best practices. This salaried, 12-month position will require that the archivist work on-site at an office in Manhattan’s Garment District. It may be possible to transfer to another Winthrop project following the completion of this processing initiative.
Key Responsibilities
- Survey collections and develop a processing plan for client review/approval
- Process materials at the folder level in accord with professional best practices and institution’s processing guidelines and procedures
- Rehouse a variety of materials to support long-term preservation
- Flag items that may require specialized housing or conservation treatment
- Create a DACS-compliant finding aid (textual elements and Excel spreadsheet container list) for ingest into ArchivesSpace
- Perform quality assurance reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of work
- Note duplicative or non-archival documentation that may be eligible for disposition
- Attend all project meetings and prepare monthly progress updates
- Supervise rehousing, labeling, and flattening performed by an Archives Technician
- Collaborate and maintain collegial relationships with client liaisons and Winthrop colleagues
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited MLIS program or equivalent accredited degree with formal training in archival theory and practice
- Minimum of 3 years of full-time work in an archives including significant processing experience
- Experience applying archival standards and best practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections
- Reading knowledge of Spanish (required)
- Knowledge of and/or familiarity with Puerto Rican history and culture
- Experience re-housing or processing photographs, artwork, and oversized materials
- Proficiency with Excel and Word
- Strong communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage time effectively, problem solve, and balance multiple priorities
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team
- Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds

- Project management experience
Compensation
Salary range: $58,000 - $62,000 with strong benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance. All full-time Winthrop employees receive paid time off and annual funds for professional development.
