Required (Minimum) Qualifications:
Position requires BA/BS or a combination of education and work experience to equal four years. Experience with Excel and operating/programming of laboratory liquid handling instrumentation. Ability to follow oral directions and written protocols precisely, independently motivated, able to manage time and meet deadlines, strong communication skills, meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability of work.
Preferred Qualifications: (Selection Criteria)
Experience with FileMaker Pro databases. Bench experience as an internship, Student employment or volunteer.
1) Sample Processing - 70%
- Receive and process CLIA or research samples in an efficient high-throughput manner (CLIA samples are only handled by validated employees and must adhere to all CLIA regulations).
- Follow UMGC or manufacturer's SOPs based on the intended research of the samples.
- Work in collaboration with other staff and researchers.
- Operate all related specialized instrumentation and technologies, i.e. ABI 7900, Illumina sequencers, Agena, MassSpec and other liquid handling robots.
- Recognize and report to supervisor any problems or complications that arise during processing.
- Ensure inventory levels are sufficient to execute current and upcoming projects.
2) Data Collection and Analysis - 10%
- Collect and analyze data using custom or vendor software, such as 7900HT Fast Real-Time PCR System Software, Agilent TapeStation Software, and UMGC Call Array Software.
- Evaluate the standard metric set for quality control.
- Generate data reports with information that is useful to the clients' research.
- Ability to accurately enter, interpret and analyze data using Excel spreadsheets.
- Proficient in MicroSoft Office suite.
3) Project Management - 10%
- Create and track projects using UMGC FileMaker Pro.
- Coordinate processing activities with student workers.
- Attend meetings with supervisor to discuss the administration and overall activity of the services.
- Facilitate the timely production and delivery of orders results for clients with Service Mangers.
- Schedule time for shared equipment.
- Maintain inventory and consumables for related services.
4) Client Correspondence and Troubleshooting - 5%
- Assist clients with locating orders, samples, and data through various methods of communication, i.e. e-mail, telephone, Zoom, WebEx, or via face-to-face interaction.
- Communicate with clients and vendors to resolve conflicts and ensure delivery of requested products.
- Troubleshoot missing or incorrect orders.
- Troubleshoot sample or result issues.
- Maintain instrumentation per manufacture protocols.
5) Follow Quality Control and Assurance Protocols - 5%
- Test samples for compliance with minimum quality control requirements using PicoGreen and Agilent Bioanalyzer.
- Create quality control reports using data.
- Maintain lab safety and CLIA requirements and guidelines.
- Complete CLIA/research required reports and records for each project.
- Assist with data mining and metadata for improving results of CLIA/research projects.

Profile One - Office/Lab Based: Time spent working remotely is occasional or inconsistent. Dedicated on campus work space to be provided.
Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

This position is located in the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) where we provide services to University and external researchers. The purpose of this position is to process genomic services at the UMGC for internal and external researchers. The workload consists of following standard operating procedures (SOP), generating and delivering data for service manager review. In addition, this position also requires the running, maintaining, and troubleshooting of specialized scientific instrumentation necessary to accomplishing the tasks associated with services.
