Overview:
The Produce Merchandiser is responsible for analysis and multi-faceted support of all aspects of PCC’s Produce category including merchandising, pricing, vendor relationships, procurement and overall strategy. They work collaboratively with Store Operations and office support departments to meet financial, social and environmental goals through the successful execution of programs in the Produce category that are guided by PCC’s Vision, Mission and Values.

Main Job Responsibilities:
  • Models and provides excellent professional customer service to both internal and external customers
  • Works with the Merchandising Team on execution of pricing and promotional programs for Produce categories based on targeted gross profits, desired PCC market position, and review of supplier costs
  • Assists in overseeing the selection of new products following department guidelines including social and environmental goals and ensures current selections are staying compliant with these guidelines
  • Supports Co-op wide promotional plans in collaboration with marketing, other merchandisers, IT, and Operations departments. This includes: monthly promotions, seasonal events, in-store sampling and product demonstrations
  • Assists and supports all aspects of Produce programs including procurement, vendor relations, category management and standard operating procedures
  • Works with the Merchandising Team in establishing a review calendar for analyzing category performance, new item placement and schematics for resets
  • Represents PCC in the industry and maintains positive and strategic vendor partnerships including negotiation of advantageous product costs.
  • Maintains a deep understanding of category management, as well as current product trends, issues and concerns and develops vendor relationships and negotiating skills
  • Partners with store staff to receive feedback on the practical application of Produce programs and to provide store staff with training, mentoring and development
  • Works in conjunction with the Merchandising Team to visit stores weekly to support and maintain established PCC merchandising guidelines and best practices for execution of said guidelines
  • Handles confidential information using discretion and judgement
Qualifications and Skills:
REQUIRED:
  • 5+ years of experience in a successful leadership role in the produce category
  • Demonstrated in-depth product and department operations knowledge within the natural and organic grocery setting
  • Proven ability to utilize knowledge of merchandising best practices in a retail grocery setting to execute product promotion and merchandising strategies that meet or exceed sales goals
  • Successful management experience driving results through a team including training, mentoring, and developing staff
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills and ability, remotely and in person
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and problem solve with excellent attention to detail
  • Proven ability to provide and drive excellent, professional customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve, and make successful business decisions in a complex retail environment
  • Ability to be a team player and appreciate working collaboratively as well as independently
  • Availability to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays and travel to all PCC locations, industry conferences and supplier visits when needed
  • Computer skills required with experience using Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

PREFERRED:
  • Experience in project management for new store set-up or remodels
