Position Purpose
The Project Manager will provide oversight, administrative coordination, and support for all aspects of a comprehensive review of Dartmouth’s osteology and historical human samples collections, including any work related to NAGPRA . Working in close collaboration with a variety of units across campus, the Project Manager will facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders and support the work of a Provost appointed working group. The Project Manager will coordinate the research, documentation, consultation, and repatriation (when possible) of osteological remains in the possession of Dartmouth.

The Project Manager position will organizationally sit within Institutional Diversity and Equity and work collaboratively with key stakeholders internally and externally. This is a one-year term position, renewable annually for up to three years.

Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree and min 3 years of project management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communications skills, with ability to effectively employ tact and discretion with sensitive matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and contribute as a positive team player.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with diverse populations.
  • Ability to effectively engage and present to a wide variety of constituents, both internally and externally.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with exceptional listening skills and high emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently and also in close collaboration with the on campus points of contact.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive matters with the utmost care and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Experience with NAGPRA compliance, tribal consultation, and/or working with descendant communities.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience supporting cross-constituency initiatives.

Description
Manage Inventories – Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Indigenous Art and in coordination with the NAGPRA Research Assistant, updates and manages inventories of ancestral human remains pertaining to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and works with internal stakeholders to develop an inventory process for all non-Native human remains in Dartmouth’s possession.

Staff Working Group – Works with a working group charged by the Provost to develop project plans, timelines, budgets and other project management documentation. Communicates expectations, deliverables, dependencies, and risks to internal staff and stakeholders. Tracks projects’ progress and prepares status report in consultation with the working group. Administers project budgets.

Coordinate Tribal Access – Works closely with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO) and/or their designees to coordinate tribal access to as well as appropriate repatriation and disposition of identified human remains, cultural items and archaeological collections in Dartmouth’s custody. Maintains records of outreach, notification, consultation, and tracks responses.
