What You Will Do

The W93 Systems Engineering Group (Q-20) is seeking a Project Program Director 4 to assist the W93 Warhead Group Leader with the exciting and rapid growing program! The successful candidate will work with the Q-20 Group Leader to develop and manage the W93 Systems Engineering Group. The successful candidate will assist the group leader with their role as Warhead Manager and Group Leader. In this capacity, the Project Program Director will help to ensure the successful design, testing, evaluation, qualification, and production of the W93. An understanding of weapon systems engineering is essential to this role.

The Project Program Director will be expected to provide engineering expertise, to assist when appropriate in resolving complex technical and programmatic issues associated with the warhead. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Group Leader in planning, organizing, and managing technical, line, and administrative activities within the group as well as in nurturing a healthy work environment that encourages learning, teaming, creating mutual respect, and delivering excellence at all levels.

In addition, you will work with division managers and leaders in the areas of operational planning, strategic planning, program implementation, communications, and execution of projects and deliverables. You will be expected to recognize and act on opportunities to influence directions, policy, and vision, both internal and external to the organization. You will participate in conducting performance appraisals, salary management, recruiting and staffing, diversity, employee development, and addressing and resolving personnel issues.

Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alternation projects.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Nuclear Weapons Knowledge

Knowledge and experience related to nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile. Engineering experience related to Systems, Aerospace, or related Engineering Experience directly related to weapons systems, subsystems design, or weapon technology development.

Program/Project Development Skills

Demonstrated experience in program development, advocacy, and strategic planning. Demonstrated use of project management principles and tools to delivering product on schedule, while engaging multiple projects with differing priorities.

Leadership Skills

Demonstrated successful leadership skills and a demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution.

Ability to identify, recruit and retain innovative staff and support their development to support new weapon design or tech maturation.

Communication and Collaboration Skills

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and with NNSA and Navy. Experience working with and integrating multiple internal and external organizations to accomplish major project deliverables.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • An MS in mechanical, aerospace, or related engineering field, is preferred.
  • Experience interfacing with Navy SSP, NNSA, SNL, and with one or more of the NSE production agencies.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management, NNSA and US Navy customers.
  • Experience with weapons related testing and experiments and an understanding of nuclear physics principles.
  • Familiar with issues and challenges related to the W93 or another Alt or LEP
  • Experience in directing the administration of research and development employees including, forecasting staffing requirements, directing assignments, assuring workforce development, and monitoring performance.
  • Promotion of institutional objectives of safety, security, and environmental preservation.
  • Experience working directly with NNSA and communicating budget requirements, scope requirements, milestone reporting, and program review processes and deliverables.
  • Active Q clearance, or ability to obtain an Active Q clearance.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, October 31st. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
