Summary
The Quality Manager provides technical support to the Sales Department and ELLWOOD aluminum customers for all phases of aluminum operations, supports operations to ensure good quality procedures are in place, oversees trials of new materials and processes to ensure proper practices are being utilized, and provides metallurgical support to management personnel. This position reports directly to the General Manager. In this role, the Quality Manager will be identifying and improve operational problems, defining standard operating procedures, recruiting and training personnel to meet manufacturing and business requirements. This position provides strategic direction for operations from a metallurgical perspective ensuring technological solutions to aluminum product development (including cost reduction and efficiency improvements) and requires interaction with several internal BU’s, suppliers and customers. The successful candidate will be a hands-on, results oriented, innovative professional who seeks continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develops, implements and maintains the QMS, i.e ISO and AS systems
- Acts as Quality Management Representative for all audit functions
- Manages Quality Techs; perform employee evaluation
- Review/approve Timesheets in UKG for payroll processing
- Plays a major role in customer relations and customer base development;
- Develops chemistry recipes to satisfy operational performance and customer requirements;
- Maintains all lab equipment and helps make decisions on implementing new equipment/practices
- Manage all metallurgical process, prepare charts and graphs and prepare appropriate reports for all investigations.
- Oversees the investigation and disposition of non-conforming material.
- Perform failure investigations on customer returns/claims.
- Maintains safe and healthy work environment by defining and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations;
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed;
- Works in consultative fashion with other manufacturing/technical engineers to improve efficiency and effectiveness;
- Responsible for inventory needs of the quality department
Education and Experience
- (Minimum) BS degree in Metallurgical/Material engineering, related field or equivalent work experience; (Master’s Degree Preferred)
- (Minimum) 1-3 years’ experience with 2x, 3x, 5x, 6x and 7x aluminum alloys; and
- (Minimum) 1-3 years’ experience with DC Casting Tables.
- ISO 9000 Certification Experience
- Metallurgical testing experience (chemistry, sample prep, etc.)
- Ultrasonic Testing Level 3
Skills and Abilities
- Problem solving and analysis including DOE, regression analysis; ASQ - CQE or SSBB a plus;
- Minitab;
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Safety focus;
- Ability to present complex technical objectives and goals in an understandable manner to achieve desired results;
- Team player with strong customer focus and interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively in a multi-discipline team environment and maintain good working relationships with customers co-workers from different backgrounds, educational levels and with skill sets;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at the highest level, along with possessing integrity and trust;
- Willingness and ability to work outside of normal work hours;
- Ability to travel regionally and nationally occasionally (10-25%); reliable transportation and valid driver’s license required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand, walk, use hands to operate equipment, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The work environment has exposure to both inside and outside environmental conditions including temperature changes and may at times be exposed to extreme heat (above 100 degrees) for periods of more than one hour. This position requires travel occasionally by land and/or air.
