Your Role

The Part Time Recreation Specialist I – Early Childhood ($19.75 per hour) duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Assist with the planning, implementation and supervision of Preschool, Before School,
  • After School, and Summer Activity Center programs for Children ages 3-6 at Virginia
  • Beach Community Recreation Centers and at Virginia Beach Public Schools
  • Assist with facilitation and implementation of meeting the Virginia's Unified Measurement and Improvement system.
  • Assist with the planning, implementation and supervision of Preschool, Before School, After School, and Summer Activity Center programs for Children ages 2 1/2 - 6 at Virginia Beach Community Recreation Centers and at Virginia Beach Public Schools
  • Assist with Classroom observations using the CLASS assessment system
  • Assist with planning and implementation of special events
  • Assist with weekly, monthly and annual statistical reports
  • Assist with preparation of required reports, documents, paperwork and promotional materials
  • Assist with the purchase of recreation equipment
  • Assist with the supervision and maintenance of program areas and inventory of equipment
  • Train and supervise part-time employees; provide and/or assist with staff training; assist with staff schedule adjustments
  • Maintain daily site visits
  • Assist with site coverage
  • Serve on various Out-of-School Time Programs Unit, Departmental and City teams and committees
  • Work with Inclusion Specialist to provide support to staff in implementing accommodation plans for children with special needs
  • Provide quality internal and external customer service
  • Maintain a safe environment

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor. Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience supervising and/or managing an early childhood program
  • Experience with direct simultaneous supervision of 2 or more classrooms/sites
  • Experience with direct supervision of 3 or more staff to include performance management
  • Experience and background working in licensed childcare
  • Knowledge and experience working w/children with disabilities/behavioral issues
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products
  • Possess a good working knowledge of the Virginia Star Quality Initiative Rating System or similar rating system
  • Strong leadership ability
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to foster and encourage teamwork at all levels

Special Instructions:

This position is being advertised as a pool, and applications could be used to fill current vacancies and any other similar Part Time Recreation Specialist I - OST position that become available within six months from the closing date of this posting.
Our programs operate Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM with occasional weekend work for training and special events. However, this position may work shifts that require the possibility of beginning work at 6:00 AM or ending after the last child is picked up at the end of programs, with the possibility of working split shifts. Additionally, supervisors are expected to be available as needed to meet the needs of staff
and customers.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.
Average scheduled hours up to 25 hours per week.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
This position may provide direct childcare in programs licensed by the State Department of Education. Convictions of any barrier crime set forth in Virginia Code §63.2-1719 shall be an automatic disqualification for employment in this position.

Requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
