The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a 100%-time Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will be responsible for performing research related activities and assisting in maintaining the laboratory. This position will provide support by conducting experiments, collecting, and analyzing results and performing operation duties related to hemostasis and thrombosis.

It is expected that as the research assistant gains experience with laboratory techniques and procedures, they will take on increased autonomy and collaboration with other laboratory members. They will also gradually increase the scientific level of their duties by adding experimental design and data analysis as well as preparation of materials for abstracts/reports/grant applications and manuscripts. This is a specified term position.


Duties to include:

  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.
  • Collect, track, and perform data entry for reports. Prepare materials for reports to be written by faculty and staff on the research project.
  • Plan and perform experimental procedures assuring fidelity to protocols; record and analyze data
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and analyze experimental protocols; propose modifications to other researchers or principal investigator; design new protocols with assistance from other researchers or principal investigator
  • Perform cloning; Perform DNA, RNA, and protein-based studies of gene expression; construction and production of viral and non-viral vectors. Perform gene expression studies on cells and tissues.
  • With minimal help from PI, arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for and perform experiments.

About the Division of Hematology/Oncology:

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. It is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a national consortium of pediatric cancer centers. The COG is well known for its new and innovative ways of treating childhood cancer. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center.

The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a natural or health science field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of one year of prior research experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with data entry and managing research databases according to best practice.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting.
  • Excellent in organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in hematology/hemostasis/thrombosis.
  • Experience in neuroinflammatory studies, tissue sectioning, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology techniques.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience caring for and handling mice to include mouse colony maintenance and management.
  • Experience arranging and planning weekly to monthly activities to prepare for and perform experiments.
  • Experience preparing materials for use in posters, manuscripts, and grant applications.
