Job Title: Research Faculty (equivalent to non-tenure track Assistant Professor)
Reporting Structure: This position is supported through the Title III funds awarded to Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) by the U.S. Department of Education. This position will be stationed at B-CU within the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM). The candidate for this position must be a US citizen, to be eligible. The Research Faculty will dedicate 100% time/efforts toward research, student training, and reporting activities relevant to the Title III funded ADAPT-EI (The Data Analytics Alliance for Environmental Intelligence) project. The research faculty will report to the PI of the project.

Job Summary: The Data Analytics Alliance for Environmental Intelligence (ADAPT-EI) at Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track Research Faculty. The program mission is to establish and provide a platform for education, research and academic enterprise, ADAPT-EI, that aligns with the 21st Technology Focus Areas of Unmanned Systems, AI, Cloud Computing, ‘Omics, Data, and Citizen Science. The program goals and objectives support and were built based on the following University Goals and the Title III Goals.

  • Identify and develop “stackable credentials” and other non-traditional programs that may not require a four-year college degree, in line with the vision and proposed programming of the federal Department of Education
  • Provide all students with practical and hands-on experience supporting their learning and professional development
  • Provide educational and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Partner with community and business groups to foster strong unifying campus connections.
This position (12-month full-time) provides a great opportunity to join a collaborative team of researchers of the Environmental Intelligence program at B-CU. B-CU is located in Daytona Beach, situated minutes from the Halifax River, the Indian River Lagoon system, and the Atlantic Ocean. The position will be stationed at the science building on the B-CU campus in Daytona Beach.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • The Research Faculty will contribute to existing projects and develop new research related to the use of data analytics (broadly defined: data mining, transformation, analyses, management, and archiving, etc.) for environmental assessment.
  • The Research Faculty will assist the program PI (Hyun Jung Cho) and affiliated faculty members in supervising students for their research activities, training, and scholarly management.
  • Other duties will include, but not limited to plan and manage laboratories and field work that are logically related to the position as assigned including progress and budget reporting.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Requirements include experiences in management of large environmental data sets.
  • The ideal candidate can demonstrate strong quantitative and analytical skills, have research experience in a relevant field, demonstrated productivity and ability to conduct independent research, and have experience in remote sensing, field data collection, and database management.
Education and Experience:
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a data/computer/environmental science-related field, preferably with expertise in environmental data management, statistics, data analysis, and/or remote sensing (+ image processing). Persons with a master’s degree, if with competitive research experiences and products will also be considered.
Preferred Skills, Experience and Education:
  • Individuals with a degree and research in data science, machine learning, and satellite/aerial/UAS-based remote sensing will be advantageous. Boat operation and maintain skills are plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Candidates should be able to work in the field under somewhat harsh conditions of Florida’s wetlands.
