The Circuit Repair Laboratory at Burke Neurological Institute, led by Edmund Hollis, II, Ph.D., is currently seeking a talented, motivated, and enthusiastic candidate for a Research Technician position with laboratory experience in either animal husbandry, rodent behavioral techniques, molecular biology, or electrophysiology. Experienced technicians, recent graduates, and current students are all encouraged to apply.
The Hollis laboratory is interested in recovery of function after spinal cord injury. Our research is described at https://burke.weill.cornell.edu/hollis-lab. We study the response of motor and sensory circuits after injury using transgenic animals, viral transduction, optogenetic and chemogenetic tools, and two-photon microscopy. The primary roles for this position will be animal husbandry and genotyping, assisting with animal behavior and surgery, and/or histology.
Duties and responsibilities include:
1. Performing rodent behavioral testing, trans-cardial perfusion, and harvesting of neural tissue for processing
2. Animal husbandry
3. Genotyping
4. Molecular biology, biochemistry, and immunohistochemistry techniques
5. Assisting with surgical and performing post-operative care of rodents
6. Occasional evening or weekend work as required by research
Requirements:
1. An ability to learn, develop, and apply new techniques
2. A minimum of a B.S.
3. 1+ years of lab experience, including knowledge of histology techniques, general techniques in molecular biology, and ability to operate standard Biochemistry/Molecular Biology laboratory equipment
4. Skill, knowledge, and experience with experimental animals
5. Organizational and note-keeping skills and the ability to use word processing, spreadsheet software and databases for Mac and PC
6. Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in an interactive and collaborative environment
7. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions, including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, and use of protective items such as gloves and goggles expected
8. A minimum two-year commitment to working in the laboratory
The Burke Neurological Institute is a nonprofit leading scientific research institute devoted to advancing the study of neurological diseases and injuries. The overarching goal of the Institute, an academic affiliate of Weill Cornell Medicine, is to leverage the most innovative and highest quality neuroscience to restore brain and spinal cord function in those with neurological injury including stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, age related macular degeneration. Twenty faculty funded by federal and private agencies work alongside 100 individuals on a beautiful 60-acre campus in White Plains, New York, 15 miles from the heart of New York City.
