REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: (must be documented)
Bachelor degree in microbiology/neuroscience and/or related areas or a combination of
education and work experience to equal 5 years. At least 1 year of hands-on laboratory
research experience with knowledge of basic BSL-2 techniques and procedures. Must be
able to work in a BSL-2 laboratory setting and willing to work in BSL-3 labs with
appropriate training provided on the job.
Must be willing to work with animals, including mice, pigs, or other production livestock
and be willing process animal tissue. The job may require obtaining medical clearance to
handle infectious agents, including receiving mandatory vaccinations.
Requires ability to use of basic computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Statistical
analysis software etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
An advanced degree with microbiology emphasis, 1-3 years of laboratory experience
working with infectious agents, in particular viruses, and ability to handle and work with
rodents. Additional expertise in any of the following is preferred:
Experience with cell culture and basic BSL-2 laboratory techniques
Experience working with rodents (mice, rats, or hamsters). Able to deliver anesthesia
and/or drugs to animals.
Experience with behavioral assays in mice or rats
Able to follow sterile technique in surgical preparation.
Experience with molecular biology and cellular biology techniques (like genotyping, RT-
PCR, flow cytometry, nucleic acid extraction, Western blot, or Sequencing analysis).
Ability to work in collaborative environment

DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:
The research technician for this Neuroimmunology lab will be involved in multiple projects
that investigate immune responses to infections and brain injury. Infectious agents
handled in the laboratory may include Mycoplasma sp., SARS-CoV2, Porcine reproductive
and respiratory disease virus (PRRSV), influenza virus, and porcine epidemic diarrhea
virus (PEDV).

The position will be actively involved in supporting experiments that evaluate the long-
term impacts of SARS-CoV2 infection and traumatic brain injury (TBI) on the brain. The
effect of neuroinflammation caused by infection and injury on neurophysiological and
behavioral outcomes will be measured in animal models of COVID-19, TBI, and Alzheimer
Disease.
This position will require the ability to plan, setup, and perform complex multi-step
procedures while providing support to implementing the experiments designed for these
projects.

Duties:
75% Lab research
independently run standard laboratory assays, like PCR, western blots, ELISA or
immunostaining, per directions provided by the (principal investigator) PI or
senior researcher in the lab
assist in protein expression, purification and analysis, per directions given by the
PI or lab manager animal colony management, reagent/chemical inventory management, lab supply ordering, and maintenance of cell cultures for the laboratory.
grow viral or bacterial stocks as required for experimental protocols.
Assist in specialized experimental procedures like flow cytometry, animal
surgeries and sample collections process animal tissues and samples for histological analysis perform routine histological work, including sectioning of prepared tissue,
preparing slides, embedding, sectioning, mounting, and staining tissue.
preparing clinical samples for virus or bacterial detection, or virus isolation
prepare standard solutions, buffers, or media according to prescribed formula,
Be responsible for and operate routine laboratory equipment such as balances, pH
meters, centrifuges, etc.

Data Analysis 25%
Records results, calculates data, and constructs simple graphs and charts.
Maintain records of research data.
The position will work closely with a team of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and
undergraduate students to ensure that laboratory resources are accessible and managed
efficiently and help as needed in conducting experiments.
