Pay starts at $15.00, increase to $17.00 once you complete the paid Online MedTech Program and Certification (must be completed within first 30 days) and increase to $17.50 after 90 days of service.

Position Summary: Responsible for assisting the Staff Nurse by performing a variety of routine medical services, including the preparation, administration and charting of medications to clients as outlined by the state and in compliance with federal requirements and Care Centers of Nassau’s policies and procedures.
Responsible to: This position works under the direct supervision and direction of the Staff Nurse and the Residential Services Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Preference given to those with prior experience and training as a Medication Technician. Must be able to successfully demonstrate knowledge and competency after receiving UMA training; as required in accordance with ICF regulations, which includes:
o Demonstrated ability to read and follow medication instructions on a prescription label, physician’s order or MAR.
o Demonstration of the ability to write legibly, complete required documentation and convey accurate and discernible information.
o Demonstration of the ability to state the purpose, common side effects and signs and symptoms of adverse reactions for a list of commonly used medications from memory or demonstrate how they obtain that information and maintain that information and maintain it for easy access.
- Experience in a residential facility such as nursing home, long term care, ICF, group home, etc. is preferred
- Must be able to read and write in the English language.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
Essential Functions: The following are the essential functions of this position. Successful job applicants will be able to perform these essential functions with or without a requested reasonable accommodation:
- Check and record vital signs and basic health statistics
- Perform basic tests and collect specimens as instructed.
- Reviews and becomes familiar with the written report of client behaviors and Medication Administration Record (MAR) prior to administering medications to client.
- Confirm that client is not capable of self-administration of medication per assessment and IDT review prior to administering medications to client.
- Prepares and administers prescribed, prepackaged, premeasured oral, topical, nasal and ophthalmic medications to clients.
- Prepare medications for one individual client at a time in a quiet location that is fee from distraction.
- Administer medications for one individual client at a time.
- Administer medications at the assigned time, with the assigned dosage and by the route prescribed by the client’s health care professional.
- Conduct a triple-check of the dosage and time of administration against the original medication container label and the MAR before administering or supervising self-administration of medication.
- Check the expiration date before administering each medication to ensure that expired medication are not administered.
- Confirm the identity of the client to whom the medication is being administered to ensure it is the same client for whom the medication has been prescribed.
- Facilitate the correct positioning and use of adaptive equipment or techniques required for that client for the proper administration of medications.
- Document medication administration in the MAR immediately after completing the client’s administration and before providing medication services to another client.
- Ensure oral medications have been completely ingested before leaving the client.
- Directly observe client for at least 20 minutes following administration of a new medication.
- Review the MAR for special instructions regarding post-medication observation periods.
- Monitor clients for side effects and effectiveness of all administered medications.
- Administer over-the-counter (OTC) medications as currently prescribed by the client’s health care professional.
- Have full knowledge of the mediations being administered per current medication administration policy.
- Inform Staff Nurse of any outdated medication for proper disposal.
- Report immediately any torn, damaged, illegible or mislabeled prescription labels to the dispensing pharmacy or pharmacist.
- Maintain and assume accountability for all schedule and controlled substances as defined by facility policy and pharmacy regulations:
o Record on MAR all medications, including PRN, and document-controlled medications on the narcotic sheet.o Seek Staff Nurse approval prior to administering PRN medications.o Always report any count discrepancies to the Staff Nurse/Supervising Nurse/DON. Assist in maintaining adequate meds/pharmaceutical stocks and supplies to provide continuity of administering meds and treatments:
o Initial and circle meds not given; record rationale and complete mediation error form.o Report any missed dosages to nurse on call as soon as possible.o Monitor expiration dates of mediations and place in appropriate area. If medications do not arrive, notify Nursing Supervisor/DON.
- Maintain the security and cleanliness of the medication room, nursing cart and nurse’s station:
o The nursing medication closet will remain locked at all times.o Inventory and restock med rooms, organize med room in compliance with policies and procedures (internal meds separate from external meds, etc).o Only authorized personnel are allowed in the nurse’s station and med room/closets.o Maintain responsibility for the nursing keys and should report immediately if any are lost/stolen.o Keep med room, nursing cart and nurse’s station clean, odor free, empty trash every shift. Inventory formula/supplies weekly and ensure all supplies when delivered are stored in a timely manner in each house. Administer treatments and stay with the client while treatment is being administered (for example, 15-minute breathing treatment, the medical assistant must stay until the breathing treatment is completed). Assessment of individual resident needs:o Make rounds with Residential Services Supervisor to assess each client at least every 2 hours while on duty.o Report any emergency/urgent problem/issue to the Staff Nurse.o Always document client problems, action taken and outcome. Wash hands with soap & water prior to administering medications or supervising self-administration of medications, between administration of medications to each client and when there is a change in route of administration. Participate in the communication process, verbal and written, of resident health and health care plan Know, understand and comply with the set duties outlined in the Emergency Procedure.
- Maintain client/resident confidentiality at all times.
- Comply with all policies regarding the reporting and prevention of abuse and neglect.
- Attend and maintain all required training with due dates.
- Report all equipment failures immediately.
- Keep open, courteous, helpful and professional communication with other staff members.
- Maintains safe, secure and healthy work environment by following and enforcing all safety standards and procedures.
- Provide assistance to Residential Living Assistants as directed and as necessary for optimal client care, which may include performing tasks such as client bathing, bath rooming, positioning and feeding.
- Any additional duties as assigned by DON, Supervising Nurse or Residential Services Supervisor.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must be able to work independently and have strong interpersonal skills. Walks, sits, stands, bends, moves, stoops, and stirs intermittently during working hours. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., throughout the work day.

- Subject to hostile and emotionally upset clients, family members, etc.
- Must possess speech/sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
- Must be willing to work beyond scheduled hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
- Subject to odors throughout the work day.
- May be responsible for handling and proper disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals.
- May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
- Must be able to read and accurately record information.
