ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Performs duties related to land surveying while working on a survey field crew under the supervision of a survey party chief or a Professional Surveyor and Mapper. Operates Total Station, data collection packages and GPS survey equipment on a survey crew operation.

Performs technical engineering tasks to measure distance and establish lines, takes cross sections/profiles and run drainage areas and traverses. Uses level to determine vertical measurements. Must be able to download field data from Total Station and GPS equipment to computer. Must be able to post process and edit field data on computer for drafting. Makes mathematical calculation using basic math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry formulas and equations. Calculates grades, elevations and horizontal control for construction stakeout, drainage ditches, roadway and other related county construction projects. Locates independently: parcel and subdivision corners, section and quarter section corners. Gathers survey information and data and makes notations and simple drawings in field books or electronically, used to plot information on maps, diagrams, and related engineering project drawings and files.

Acts as Survey Party Chief when assigned. Performs duties of Survey Technician II as necessary. Assists with training of other survey party crew staff as required.

Cleans and provides general maintenance of equipment and vehicles. Assists with ensuring that necessary supplies are available to perform survey work assignments.

Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the basic principles of land surveying, especially in boundary and topographic work. Knowledge of the means, methods, practices, and techniques used to operate Total Station and GPS survey instruments. Knowledge of and ability to calculate engineering formulas and equations using basic mathematics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Ability to read and interpret maps.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Ability to make survey notations and draw simple sketches. Ability to read and interpret civil engineering plans and specifications. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, officials, and the public. Ability and agility to perform various labor tasks in all weather conditions and environmental areas. Ability to become familiar with the roadway/highway system within Polk County. Ability to oversee the work of others and acts as lead worker.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of two (2) years surveying experience which includes the operations of Total Station and GPS survey instruments.

Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment.

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
