Job Title: Roundhouse Laborer / Locomotive Watchman

Reports To: Roundhouse Foreman

Type of position: Non Exempt/Hourly

Pay: $15 - $20

Location: Durango, CO

Job Summary: The Roundhouse Laborer’s primary role is to provide support for the operations and maintenance of the DSNGRR locomotives and to assist the mechanical staff. This position will be primarily based out of the Durango yard however, it may include periods of work at other locations owned by the railroad.

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work both individually, and in a team environment. Candidates should have a basic understanding of how to work within an industrial and/or railroad environment. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a basic understanding steam and diesel locomotives and/or possess any trade skills such as welding or machining.

Requirements:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily engine watchman duties of maintaining locomotive boiler water levels and steam pressure.
  • Clean fires as required on coal burning locomotives.
  • Fuel both oil and coal burning locomotives.
  • Work with mechanics to carry out daily maintenance and repairs on steam locomotives.
  • Perform daily inspections and servicing of steam locomotives.
  • Assist mechanics in performance of heavy repairs and rebuilds on locomotives.
  • Assist in the organization, cleanliness, and general upkeep of the shop facilities.
  • Create and maintain a safe work environment that adheres to all regulations and company policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by CMO, or Roundhouse Foreman.

Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.
  • Previous relevant mechanical experience.
  • Ability to use a basic variety of shop tools.
  • Understanding steam locomotive operations and maintenance a plus.
  • Welding, machining, or other trade skills a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass DSNGRR pre-employment and ongoing physical capabilities exams.
  • Must have ability to operate heavy equipment such as loader, forklift, and tractor.

Work Conditions:

  • Work primarily in a railroad shop environment with periods of outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work all shifts as assigned.
  • Full-time, minimum 40 hours per week schedule.
  • Extended periods of time walking, standing.
  • Regular lifting up to and sometimes in excess of 50 pounds.
